About ASC and this role: Austin Sunshine Camps (ASC) is a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide the magic of overnight camp without the barrier of cost. We also host year-round programming at our Zilker Lodge in Zilker Park and our rustic Lake Travis camp. We are seeking a passionate advocate for people and culture who is excited to grow alongside our organization and make a lasting impact. As our People and Culture Manager, you will wear many hats: HR manager, recruiter, onboarding specialist, process wizard, and culture ambassador. You’ll lead the charge on bringing in great people, making sure they have an exceptional onboarding experience, and supporting them throughout their journey at ASC. The People and Culture Manager will play a key role in supporting and developing both full-time and seasonal staff, with an increased focus on seasonal hiring and engagement during the camp season. You’ll keep our operations running smoothly behind the scenes, from employee relations and compliance to seasonal staff evaluations. This is a new and pivotal role for ASC, and we’re eager to welcome someone who’s passionate about learning, collaboration, and building meaningful systems that help people thrive.
You will work a typical, but flexible 40 hours per week during the months of September - April, with occasional evening and weekend hours. During summer camp season (typically mid-May through early August), this role will be available to support seasonal staff and the programs team when necessary, which may often result in longer hours. You should be prepared to be on-call during this period, as needed. At the conclusion of summer camp, this role will be encouraged to take ample PTO in order to recharge.
Recruitment & Onboarding (~40%)
- Serve as the organizational expert on the best and most effective strategies for seasonal staff recruitment in the overnight camping industry.
- Develop and document a comprehensive end-to-end recruitment process for ASC.
- Partner with the programs team to recruit exceptional seasonal staff each year, including counselors, counselors-in-training, collegiate volunteers, kitchen staff, nursing staff, etc. - ASC currently recruits between 100-120 seasonal staff members.
- Lead the recruitment for and expansion of ASC’s collegiate volunteer program, which is currently at the University of Texas and Texas State University.
- Prepare and post job descriptions for all seasonal staff.
- Schedule and lead all screening interviews for seasonal staff.
- Prepare offer letters, employment agreements, facilitate background checks, and conduct orientations for all seasonal staff.
- Maintain hiring and HR databases (Campbrain & Rippling) throughout the recruitment process.
- Provide reporting to stakeholders as needed.
- Oversee and analyze exit interviews to capture valuable insights for feedback.
- Collaborate with the ASC Leadership Team for full-time employee recruitment needs including posting jobs, screening candidates, and coordinating interviews.
Employee Relations & Compliance (~40%)
- Assist the Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) to ensure compliance with employment laws (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEOC, and state labor laws).
- Assist the DFO with maintaining personnel files and HR records in compliance with nonprofit and legal requirements, as well as American Camp Association and Texas Youth Camp License requirements.
- Serve as the primary resource for seasonal staff questions, concerns, or conflicts.
- Provide guidance to managers on both seasonal and full-time employee relations issues such as performance, discipline, and grievances.
- Lead seasonal staff-related investigations and progressive discipline in collaboration with managers.
- Work collaboratively with the ASC Leadership Team to ensure full-time employee relations are managed with transparency, equity, and alignment to organizational values/culture
Administrative & Cross-Team Support (~10%)
- Oversee HR admin tasks, including compliance audits, benefits coordination, and policy updates.
- Create and streamline processes that connect HR with other departments (payroll, hiring workflow, etc.).
Culture & Engagement (~10%)
- Lead initiatives that keep our team connected, valued, and inspired, including a staff wellness initiative focused on mental health, burnout, and other common industry needs.
- Act as a culture ambassador, modeling ASC’s values every day.
- Support seasonal supervisors in delivering meaningful performance evaluations.
- Provide consistent training opportunities for all ASC staff on the importance of culture and engagement.
What We’re Looking ForRequired:
- Deeply aligned with the mission of Austin Sunshine Camps.
- At least 2 years in an HR-related role.
- Proven ability to recruit, train, and retain teams.
- Strong project management and organizational skills; able to juggle multiple timelines and priorities.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to coach others.
- Ability to collaborate across departments and serve on cross-functional committees.
- Comfortable working independently and taking initiative to solve problems.
- Must be able to work nights and weekends as required, as well as be on-call during the summer months.
- Willing to become Ropes/Challenge Course Certified and work as part of the team to conduct Ropes Course sessions for campers, volunteers, renters, and other stakeholder groups when needed.
- Able to lift up to 35 lbs and provide hands-on setup and light facility upkeep when needed.
- Must pass a National Enhanced Criminal Background Check.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in HR, business, or related field.
- PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP certification preferred.
- Experience in an overnight camp environment—especially in staffing or leadership.
- Passion for building teams that change lives.
- Familiarity with Google Workspace, Canva, recruitment platforms, Campbrain, Slack, Asana, and other technology systems.

Compensation and benefits- Salary: The starting salary range is $60,000 - $75,000, depending on experience and education.
- Health, dental, and vision insurance: ASC covers 50% of employees’ health, vision, dental insurance in the first year of employment, increasing by 10% at each work anniversary.
