A Scenic + Technical CAD Drafter is primarily responsible for translating Client Designs (Render or Sketch) into 3D models and providing 2D shop drawings for internal and external fabrication. Having previous industry experience in events or trade shows will be on display when assisting production managers in vendor negotiations including drawings in metal, plastics, wood, fabric, and custom 3D elements. In addition, this role supports the scenic and technical teams by attending site surveys, creating site and floorplans, and integrating elements from multiple departments into cohesive installation guides.
Working through conceptual and complex build methods with our CAD engineers and fabrication department is vital to this role. Whether the position is executed remotely or in office, it’s expected that a strong line of communication is kept between Design, Production Managers, CAD engineers, and the Fabrication team during projects. In some cases, this role may stretch to create construction drawings to support in-house fabrication in our PDX wood shop including CNC, LED, graphic applications, and finish work. In that case, drawings sets might include CNC files, assembly instructions, detailed exploded diagrams with part identifications, and clean nomenclature up to our industry standards.
Essential Responsibilities + Skills
- Creation of 2D drawings and floorplans, 3D models, and occasionally 2D/3D construction drawings
- Drawings and models to reflect industry build standards, proposing appropriate build materials, construction methods, and hardware
- Accurate and precise communication to execute project within time and budget
- Understand general dimensioning and tolerances for successful production
- Work closely with Fab team & Scenic Production Managers to obtain reference information for drawings, evaluate design concepts and make proposals to resolve design challenges
- Updates accordingly drawing set per request to reflect the final product
- Updates and maintains file database for future reference purposes
- Supports developing concept to design intent from prototyping to final build
- Owns, develops, and establishes nomenclature standards in drawing sets
- Recognizes, evaluates, communicates, and implements drawings standards to the team
Qualifications
- College degree or equivalent work experience in a related field is required
- At least 3 years of experience required as a 2D/3D CAD Drafter in a similar industry (Environmental + Event Design, Traditional + Digital Fabrication, Furniture, and/or Graphics)
- Prefer experience with Rhino3D, Vectorworks, Solidworks, or Fusion360
- Moderate experience in Adobe CS and MS Office, as both are a vital part of daily tasks
- Prefer some carpentry experience with basic understanding of hand and power tools, woodworking, and construction techniques commonly used for building furniture, exhibits, or architecture
- Excellent problem-solving skills and highly detail orientated
