Mission
LENS’s mission is to end traffic accidents. We partner with Public Safety Agencies who use LENS to detect pre-accidents to prevent accidents before they happen. By using LENS, Public Safety Officers detect hazards, which include Disabled Vehicles, Objects on the Road, and even Pedestrians on the Freeway, to prevent accidents and save lives.
Role
As a Software Engineer, you seek transformational change. You do not accept the status quo that accidents are an accepted inevitability, or that
they just happen. Instead, you believe when the root cause of an accident can be known in advance, the accident can and should be prevented. You work with fellow Preventers that share this core belief, and together use LENS to prevent accidents and save lives.
CBS LA recently did a three minute TV feature that succinctly captures what LENS is doing with Public Safety Agencies in one of the largest traffic capitals in the world:
CHP LA Communications Center using AI to prevent accidents before they happen
You will increase the scale and speed of preventing accidents by being singularly focused on developing the software that makes mission-critical outcomes possible. You write clean, maintainable, high-quality code and take ownership of features from design through testing, deployment, and ongoing refinement. You are driven by creativity and system-level thinking, and routinely develop novel solutions to complex problems. You understand not only how a piece of code works, but how it fits into the larger product and serves the people who depend on it. You will have a broad surface area to impact, with time a limited resource. You play to win and go where mission leverage is greatest - system design, backend services, cloud infrastructure, data reliability, performance and monitoring, etc. - to maximally impact LENS’s mission in the communities we serve.
Your impact on the LENS mission is measured by:
- Pre-accidents detected, accidents prevented, and lives saved through the infrastructure, systems, and product capabilities you design, build, and operate
- Pre-accidents detected, accidents prevented, and lives saved through the operational, educational, and technical frameworks you create, improve, and scale across agencies
- Pre-accidents detected, accidents prevented, and lives saved through breakthrough capabilities you invent or assemble that fundamentally expand what is possible in ending traffic accidents
Values & Principles
The LENS team is a culture built on a shared set of values and principles. Our culture is defined not by what we say, but by what we do (credit to Ben Horowitz’s book). Some of our values that define what we do are: (1) Prioritize what fulfills the mission the fastest, (2) Elevate each other to our highest & best frequency, (3) Systems-thinking, end to end. A few of our principles include: (1) we learn, practice, and master. (2) we continually absorb what enables operators of LENS to make an impact, and make that even better, (3) we focus to supercharge our impact. Our Mission, Values, and Principles together give us a clear, shared, and continually evolving framework to keep enabling more Public Safety officers to prevent accidents and save more lives.
