Job Summary
The Junior Structural Designer supports the development of innovative and functional folding carton packaging solutions for a variety of consumer products. Working closely with senior designers, sales, and production teams, this role assists in creating structural designs that meet customer specifications, production capabilities, and cost requirements. This position is ideal for individuals early in their packaging design career who are looking to develop technical and creative skills in a manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the design and development of folding carton structures that meet customer requirements and manufacturing capabilities.
- Create and modify die lines, structural layouts, and packaging concepts using CAD software.
- Support senior designers in developing prototypes, mockups, and samples for customer presentations and testing.
- Ensure designs meet production, converting, and finishing requirements including die-cutting, folding, gluing, and printing processes.
- Prepare design files and technical documentation for manufacturing and prepress teams.
- Participate in design reviews and collaborate with cross-functional teams including sales, production, and quality.
- Assist in troubleshooting structural issues during production or prototyping.
- Maintain organized records of design files, specifications, and revisions.
- Stay informed on packaging trends, materials, and sustainability initiatives.
Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Industrial Design, Graphic Communications, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 0–2 years of experience in packaging design or folding carton manufacturing preferred.
- Basic knowledge of folding carton structures and packaging materials.
- Familiarity with CAD software used in packaging design (such as ArtiosCAD, Impact, or similar).
- Understanding of printing and converting processes is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Good organizational and time management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Skills
- Experience creating physical mockups and prototypes.
- Exposure to sustainable packaging design concepts.
- Basic understanding of die-cutting and gluing equipment used in folding carton manufacturing.
