Salary Range: $35- $40 an hour
Travel: 5 trips per year up to 30 days total
BlackSea Engineering is seeking a Junior Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Baltimore. This role will focus on the design, development, and integration of mechanical systems, with a strong emphasis on unmanned maritime systems. The ideal candidate would bring a willingness to learn new skills, ability to work independently when needed, and a familiarity with engineering design concepts with some design and build experience.
Work would be performed under the supervision of more senior engineers, and may include:
- Supporting team work efforts to design, manufacture, and test equipment on crewed and unmanned Surface Vessels and submersible systems, including the vessels themselves
- Equipment can include vessel hull designs and modifications, vessel drivetrains, electromechanical components and accessories, sensor arches, removable hatches, mechanical and shipboard handling equipment, winches, capture and release devices, motors, pumps, operator interfaces, integration of wiring harnesses, sensors, and microprocessors
- Planning, coordinating, and integrating equipment on customer vessels
- Assisting in the development of design data ranging from fabrication drawings through system descriptions / diagrams, technical reports, and customer presentations
- Coordinating with project personnel to ensure that program requirements and expectations are met in a timely manner
Key Responsibilities Include (but Are Not Limited To)
- Contribute to the design, analysis, and integration of mechanical systems, components, and structures.
- Support prototyping, virtual and physical testing, troubleshooting, and evaluation of components and systems in lab, shop, and field environments.
- Assist in planning and executing project tasks, including technical design, documentation, and schedule tracking.
- Generate and manage 3D CAD models and detailed mechanical drawings.
- Coordinate with fabrication teams (machine shops, welders, technicians) and cross-disciplinary engineering teams (electrical, controls, systems).
- Independently solve straightforward engineering challenges using established methods and tools.
- Apply engineering fundamentals to solve technical challenges under the guidance and mentorship of other engineers.
- Support compliance with project requirements, engineering standards, and customer specifications.
Requirements
Required Skills
- U.S. Citizenship
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or another relevant technical discipline from an ABET-accredited school
- Up to 3 years’ experience working on projects with engineering content such as machine design, kinematics, structural evaluation, systems engineering, unmanned vehicles or vessels, or related fields.
- At least one year of 3D CAD modeling experience
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Applicants should be able to board and traverse boats and ships.
- Ability and willingness to receive and maintain a US Government security clearance
Desired Skills
- SolidWorks experience in part modeling, assemblies, and drafting.
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis tools such as SolidWorks Simulation
- Exposure to design engineering involving a variety of components, structures, and systems.
- Supporting small teams performing small to medium projects
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and intuition with experience in the design, testing, and production of electromechanical or robotic systems
- Design engineering experience with a variety of components, structures, and systems
- Experience working in fast-paced or quick-reaction environments
- Interest in maritime activities, structures, and/or vehicles
- Background with electromechanical components and control systems
- Familiarity with machine shop operations or collaboration with fabrication technicians, welders, or multidisciplinary engineering teams
- An existing US Government security clearance
- Technical curiosity and enthusiasm for conceptualizing, designing, building, and testing innovative systems across multiple domains — from seafloor to aerospace.
- A desire and ability to travel for testing and demonstrations.
