Financial Controller
Ortiz Funeral Home Inc.
Location: New York City (Bronx NY)
Level: Full-Time
Position Overview
Ortiz Funeral Home Inc. is seeking a disciplined and strategic Financial Controller to own and elevate financial operations across our eight New York City branches. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Controller will serve as a key partner responsible for consolidated accounting, trust fund governance, regulatory compliance, payroll oversight, and financial transparency across a complex multi-location organization.
This leader will strengthen internal controls, professionalize financial processes, ensure audit readiness, and help build the financial foundation necessary to support the organization’s long-term health and operational excellence within New York’s highly regulated death care environment.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Enterprise Consolidation: Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual consolidation of financial statements across all eight branches.
- Performance Visibility: Maintain general ledger integrity and develop location-level P&L dashboards and budget-to-actual reporting.
- Cash Flow & Collections: Manage enterprise-wide cash flow and optimize “at-need” collection processes to improve accounts receivable performance.
- Vendor & Inventory Oversight: Oversee procurement controls and vendor relationships for high-cost inventory (caskets, urns, vaults, and related supplies).
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Lead the annual budgeting process and rolling forecasts to support executive decision-making and operational planning.
Trust & Regulatory Compliance
- Pre-Need Trust Governance: Oversee accounting and compliance for pre-funded funeral arrangements, ensuring all funds are properly trusted and revenue is recognized only upon service delivery in accordance with New York State law.
- Audit & Regulatory Leadership: Serve as the primary liaison to the NYS Comptroller, Department of Health (DOH), and other oversight agencies. Maintain audit-ready schedules and documentation at all times.
- Operational Compliance Alignment: Ensure firm registrations, DOHMH requirements, and death certificate filings (eVital/EDRS) are reconciled with service revenue and financially supported.
- Regulatory Documentation: Maintain rigorous documentation to support NYC DOHMH inspections and periodic reviews of funeral directing practices.
Payroll, Systems & Administration
- Payroll Leadership: Oversee payroll and benefits administration for funeral directors, embalmers, administrative staff, and support personnel across all locations, ensuring full compliance with NYC and NYS labor and overtime regulations.
- Systems Optimization: Optimize accounting platforms including QuickBooks Enterprise and funeral management systems.
- Process Standardization: Establish and enforce standardized financial SOPs across all branches.
- Internal Controls: Design and implement financial controls to reduce risk, prevent revenue leakage, and support scalable growth.
Qualifications
Experience & Education
- 7–10 years of progressive accounting leadership experience.
- Experience in multi-unit retail, healthcare, service-based, or death care environments strongly preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- CPA strongly preferred due to complex trust accounting and regulatory requirements.

Technical & Industry Skills
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Enterprise and industry-specific software
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls.
- Advanced Excel skills (financial modeling, reconciliations, dashboards).
- Familiarity with NYC regulatory landscape, including HRA burial allowance processes and eVital/EDRS systems preferred.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- High-integrity leader with a “controls-first” mindset.
- Operationally disciplined yet strategically oriented.
- Experienced in scaling financial operations across multiple locations.
- Capable of modernizing systems and driving financial transparency.
