About Southern Mechanical Contractors
Southern Mechanical Contractors is a leading commercial mechanical and plumbing contractor serving the Metro Atlanta area and throughout Georgia. We specialize in commercial HVAC, plumbing, across education, industrial, municipal, hospitality, and mixed-use facilities.
We are looking for an experienced Mechanical & Plumbing Project Manager who has real-world field experience and understands how commercial projects are built—not just managed from behind a desk.
This position is ideal for someone who has worked in the field as a foreman, superintendent, installer, or service technician before transitioning into project management.
Position Summary
The Mechanical & Plumbing Project Manager is responsible for managing commercial HVAC and plumbing projects from turnover through closeout. The successful candidate will oversee project financials, schedules, subcontractors, vendors, field personnel, and customer relationships while ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to Southern Mechanical Contractors' quality standards.
This individual must be a self-starter who can solve problems, communicate effectively, and make sound decisions without constant oversight.
Responsibilities
- Manage commercial HVAC and plumbing projects from preconstruction through closeout.
- Develop and maintain project schedules.
- Prepare and track budgets, forecasts, and monthly cost reports.
- Review plans, specifications, and contract documents.
- Coordinate procurement of equipment and materials.
- Manage subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers.
- Issue purchase orders and subcontract agreements.
- Coordinate with general contractors, owners, architects, and engineers.
- Conduct project meetings and maintain meeting minutes.
- Process RFIs, submittals, change orders, and closeout documentation.
- Work closely with field foremen and superintendents to resolve installation issues.
- Monitor labor productivity and job costs.
- Identify project risks and proactively develop solutions.
- Maintain strong customer relationships throughout the project.
- Ensure projects comply with company safety standards and applicable codes.
- Assist estimating and preconstruction teams when needed.
- Support field personnel with technical guidance and problem solving.
QualificationsRequired
- Minimum 5 years of commercial mechanical or plumbing construction experience.
- Previous field experience as a foreman, superintendent, installer, pipefitter, plumber, sheet metal mechanic, or HVAC technician.
- Minimum 3 years of project management experience in commercial mechanical construction.
- Strong understanding of HVAC and plumbing systems.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Knowledge of project scheduling and construction sequencing.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Preferred
- Experience with design-build projects.
- Experience with Bluebeam, Procore, Viewpoint, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or similar construction software.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (not required for candidates with extensive field experience).
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who:
- Has earned respect in the field.
- Takes ownership of their projects.
- Is organized and detail-oriented.
- Communicates honestly and professionally.
- Builds strong relationships with customers and coworkers.
