About Solomon Hess Capital Management
Solomon Hess Capital Management is a boutique investment manager with a mission to generate attractive risk-adjusted returns for our investors. With approximately $900 million in assets under management, we provide institutional investors with fixed-income focused investment funds. Since our founding in 2004, our seven-person team has invested over $3.6 billion on behalf of our capital providers.
The Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented and technically proficient Analyst to join our close-knit investment team. This role is central to our daily investment activity, responsible for owning the day-to-day execution of trades and ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and efficiency of our portfolio analytics. You will support the Portfolio Manager by independently pricing and bidding on SBA 7(a) loans, pools, and derivatives. This role involves direct daily communication with street-side brokers and trading counterparties; as such, the candidate must possess the confidence to represent the firm in the marketplace.
This is a technical role that requires a strong understanding of financial and data analysis (an Excel and finance competency test will be given in the final stage interview) and an interest in fixed income investment products. We are looking for an early career professional (pre-MBA) that is exceptionally organized, process-orientated, and wants a career in asset management and trading. The candidate will evaluate and execute investment decisions daily, operating with a high degree of autonomy, and must be comfortable working under strict market deadlines.
What You'll Do (Key Responsibilities)
Fund Operations & Trade Support:
Analyze and price daily SBA 7(a) loan offerings; manage the end-to-end bidding process according to the firm’s investment mandate.
Serve as the primary point of contact for brokers and trading counterparties to source inventory and ensure seamless trade execution.
Manage the trade lifecycle, including trade capture, data entry, confirmation, and settlement.
Maintain and enhance the firm's portfolio management systems, databases, and operational workflows to drive efficiency and ensure data integrity.
Act as the primary owner of portfolio data, executing daily checks and reconciliations to ensure accuracy.
Portfolio Reporting & Analysis:
Perform daily portfolio analysis to assist the Portfolio Manager in monitoring risk and performance.
Leverage operational data to generate and deliver periodic reports for internal and external stakeholders, including investor-facing reports.
Identify and implement opportunities to automate manual data and reporting processes using tools like Excel, Python, or VBA.
Contribute to ad-hoc portfolio analysis and data-driven projects that support the firm's investment and strategic goals.
Who We're Looking For (Ideal Candidate Skills)
Experience: 0-3 years of experience in consulting, community or regional banking, or investment analysis. We are open to exceptional recent graduates with a demonstrated passion for financial markets.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
Quantitative & Technical Aptitude:
Required: High proficiency in Microsoft Excel is mandatory. You should be highly comfortable with financial modeling, functions, pivot tables, and data manipulation. There will be an excel competency test for final stage candidates.
Strongly Preferred: Experience with programming languages for data analysis and automation (Python, VBA).
Bonus: Familiarity with Bloomberg and an interest in leveraging new technologies like LLMs to re-engineer workflows.
Meticulous Attention to Detail: A demonstrated ability to manage complex datasets and processes with flawless accuracy.
Professional Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to negotiate and interact effectively with external brokers.
Problem-Solving Mindset: A proactive and resourceful approach to identifying issues, proposing solutions, and improving systems.
Location: Must be based in the D.C. metro area for a hybrid schedule to firm’s Arlington office near the Virginia-Square metro stop. We will not consider out-of-market candidates and we will not sponsor visas.
What We Offer
Competitive Salary & Benefits: Salary range from $85,000-$100,000/year + bonus depending on experience and qualifications, as well as company paid health insurance and retirement plans.
Direct Impact: As a key member of a small team, your work will have a direct and visible impact on the firm's success and the Funds we manage.
Mentorship: You will work directly with the firm's partners and senior leaders every day, gaining front row exposure to the entire investment process.
