Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Research Scientist (Materials Science) role based in Skokie, IL. The Research Scientist will design and conduct experiments focused on nanoscale materials, thin films, and patterned substrates using TERA-print tools, documenting methodologies and results in detail. Day-to-day responsibilities include developing and characterizing new materials and inks for nanofabrication, optimizing process parameters, and analyzing structure–property relationships using advanced microscopy and spectroscopy. The role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to translate experimental findings into product improvements, contributing to technical documentation, and supporting customer-facing demonstrations or application development. We are looking for an accomplished and driven individual in materials science, chemistry, physics or chemical engineering to drive the development of this technology into thin-film material synthesis. This role will allow you to work in a fast-paced and collaborative team focused on tackling challenges related to the future of advanced manufacturing, scaling paradigm-shifting materials from the laboratory scale to the fab.
Once here you will
- Perform experiments for large area synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) thin films
- Analyze experimental results and assess quality of products
- Work with scientists and engineers from diverse backgrounds on a broad spectrum of applications in chemistry, materials science, and physics
- Get involved in all aspects of the application development process from ideation and proof-of-principle validation to optimization and implementation
- Become part of a culture that lets you both learn and teach while working with people outside of your immediate area of expertise
Qualifications
- BS or MS in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Chemical Engineering or similar field
- Preferred: 1+ years of experience in chemical or materials discovery companies
- Experience in thin-film synthesis, characterization/microscopy (SEM. TEM, XRD, XPS, AFM, Raman etc.), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and/or similar materials,
- Bonus: Experience with LabVIEW, Python, photolithography, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), atomic layer deposition (ALD), physical vapor deposition (PVD), automating characterization workflows, micro/nanofabrication, device fabrication, surface metrology or crystallography
- Great interpersonal skills, strong verbal, written and visual presentation skills, as well as excellent storytelling and narrative skills
- Confident and comfortable interacting with interdisciplinary groups of researchers and scientists, as well as with potential customers about technology
- Proactive, creative problem solver that thrives in a fluid and interdisciplinary environment
