Social Media & Digital Content Coordinator
Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras · Madison, WI
Part-time, approximately 20 hours/week · Reports to the Director of Marketing & Communications Hybrid, with required on-site presence during Saturday rehearsals and select concerts Compensation: $23-$25/hour depending on experience.
About this role
Every Saturday, more than 500 young musicians walk into the WYSO Center for Music and spend the morning inside a Brahms symphony, a Star Wars suite, a percussion piece they couldn't play in September. Right now, almost none of that reaches anyone who isn't already in the building.
This is a new position, the first time WYSO will have someone dedicated to telling its story on social media. You'll be building the program from the ground up, working closely with the Director of Marketing & Communications, who owns the strategy and will protect your time so you can focus on the work.
The work is, at its heart, simple: be in the room when the thing is happening, capture it well, and shape it into stories that show what WYSO actually is: a place where young people discover what they're capable of becoming. If that sentence resonates with you more than a list of software proficiencies does, please keep reading.
What you'll do
Be present and capture. This is the core of the job, especially in the first several months. You'll spend Saturday mornings in rehearsal rooms and concert weekends backstage, shooting photo and short video on a phone(or your own camera). You'll get to know the orchestras, the conductors, the students, and the rhythm of a season, and you'll build a library of material that WYSO has never had.
Tell the story. You'll edit short-form video (primarily Instagram Reels), write posts in WYSO's voice, and publish on a consistent schedule (roughly three to four times a week during the season). The through-line is always the same: young people working and evolving. You'll work from a shared content calendar built around the concert cycle, enrollment season, and WYSO's development priorities.
Grow the community. You'll respond to comments and messages, help current families feel proud enough to share, and – over time – help WYSO reach the next generation of supporters: younger parents and professionals who care about music education and want to feel part of something.
Help us learn. Using platform-native analytics, you'll track what resonates and adjust. Nothing elaborate, just enough to make the next month smarter than the last.
Where the work lives
- Instagram is the primary channel and where most of your effort goes.
- Facebook is the community channel for current families; content is adapted from Instagram, not created separately.
- LinkedIn gets a monthly, more substantive post aimed at professionals and community leaders. You'll begin building these posts out in the second half of the year, once you've got the material.
- YouTube is the archive for concert footage and longer pieces.
We're deliberately not spreading across every platform. Depth on a few channels beats presence on all of them.
What this role is not
The Social Media & Digital Content Coordinator is not a design position: WYSO works with a graphic designer for print and brand assets. It's not a general communications inbox: requests for social content come through the Director of Marketing & Communications, so you can focus on the work rather than fielding asks from every direction. And it's not primarily a desk job.
Who we're looking for
You must have:
- A portfolio of short-form video and photography that shows a good eye. We care far more about what you've made than how long you've been making it.
- Comfort shooting in live, fast-moving settings (rehearsals, concerts, events) without being disruptive.
- Clean, warm, accessible writing
- Working fluency with mobile-first editing tools (CapCut, InShot, Lightroom mobile, or similar).
- Reliable transportation and real availability on Saturday mornings and concert evenings/weekends, September through May.
- Integrity and good judgment around working alongside young people and their families.
It helps if you have:
- A musical background of any kind, or genuine enthusiasm for what it looks like when kids make music together
- Experience in arts, education, or youth-serving organizations
- Familiarity with basic social analytics
- Experience with Canva or Adobe tools
We're not requiring a specific number of years of experience. A recent graduate with a strong reel and the right instincts is a serious candidate.
Schedule and logistics
Approximately 20 hours per week, with real week-to-week variation: heavier during concert weeks (Steenbock Fall Concerts in November, Winterfest in February, Percussion Extravaganza and Notes & Narratives in March, Bolz Spring Concerts in May), lighter in between. Saturday mornings on-site during the season are required. Editing and publishing can be done remotely. Summer is quieter and is when planning for the next season happens. Occasionally, we’ll ask you to cover an outside rental event at the WYSO Center to help showcase how rental prospects can use the facility for their own needs.
Our commitment to the young people we serve
WYSO is a youth organization, and this role will feature students under 18 in nearly everything it produces. We take that seriously. You'll work within a consent system that tracks family permissions, follow clear rules about how minors are identified in content, and respect every family's right to opt out. Protecting the students always comes before the post.
To apply
Send a short note about why this role interests you, a resume, and – most importantly – a link to a portfolio or reel showing your photo and video work, to jake@wysomusic.org. If you have work that shows people learning or performing, lead with that.
WYSO is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes candidates of all backgrounds.
