Business Systems Engineer | DeFelsko Corporation
DeFelsko is looking for a Business Systems Engineer to help develop, maintain, and improve the software systems that keep our business and manufacturing operations running.
This is an opportunity to work across a variety of interconnected systems supporting production scheduling, inventory, purchasing, accounting, production testing and calibration, and customer order processing. You’ll work closely with our Lead Software Developer and colleagues throughout the company to understand how our business operates, solve technical problems, and implement improvements that make our systems more reliable and effective.
The role goes beyond writing code. You’ll learn how information moves through our business—from purchasing materials and managing inventory to manufacturing, testing, and fulfilling customer orders. By understanding how these systems work together, you’ll help ensure that changes solve the right problems without disrupting related processes.
We’re looking for someone who enjoys understanding how things work, investigating problems, improving existing software, and taking increasing ownership of the systems they support.
Key Responsibilities
Analyze and Understand Business Systems
- Learn how our applications, databases, interfaces, and workflows work individually and together.
- Work with accounting, purchasing, production, calibration, and other departments to understand their processes and identify system needs.
- Trace transactions across interconnected systems to investigate errors, data discrepancies, and unexpected results.
- Understand existing system functionality and design before making changes, including how modifications may affect other applications and business processes.
- Evaluate solutions and recommend technical improvements for review with the Lead Software Developer.
Develop and Improve Applications
- Develop, modify, test, and maintain business applications, scripts, integrations, and software components.
- Support and enhance applications used for production scheduling, inventory management, replenishment, kitting, traceability, and financial reporting.
- Maintain production test and calibration software used for instrument communications, data collection, certificates, and test results.
- Improve customer-facing applications for product returns and sales order entry, processing, and fulfillment.
- Write and maintain SQL queries, database views, and reports, validating results against actual business transactions.
- Work with SAP Business One and SAP HANA, along with internally developed applications and integrations.
Test, Implement, and Support Changes
- Develop and execute tests to confirm that changes meet requirements and preserve existing functionality.
- Investigate software issues, identify root causes, and implement or recommend corrective actions.
- Coordinate assigned enhancements from requirements gathering and analysis through development, testing, implementation, and follow-up.
- Document system functionality, technical changes, testing, and troubleshooting procedures.
- Follow established practices for version control, testing, security, and software deployment.
- Build the knowledge and skills to take increasing responsibility for assigned systems and provide support coverage when needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline (Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial or Systems Engineering), or Computer Science with demonstrated engineering practice, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- At least three (3) years of professional experience developing, implementing, maintaining, or supporting software applications or business systems.
- Programming experience in a general-purpose language such as C#, Java, or Python, with the ability to learn and work within an existing codebase.
- Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
- Experience troubleshooting software in a production or operational environment.
- Familiarity with version control, software testing, and technical documentation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a practical approach to investigating issues.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work with both technical colleagues and personnel in other departments.
The following experience is a plus, but not required:
- SAP Business One, SAP HANA, or another ERP/MRP system.
- SAP integrations, Service Layer, DI API, user-defined objects, Crystal Reports, or Query Manager.
- Manufacturing, inventory management, purchasing, production scheduling, or quality systems.
- Laboratory testing, calibration management, electronics, or instrumentation manufacturing.
- Git or another version control system.
- Linux command-line tools.
