Senior Software Engineer - Lead mission-critical systems into the future

Herndon, VA

Own the software that keeps complex missions moving

You’ll be the technical lead driving multiple software products that matter, from modernization efforts to next-generation growth initiatives.

This is full-lifecycle impact – requirements, architecture, implementation, deployment, and sustainment – with you setting the engineering bar for the team.

You’ll mentor engineers, shape system designs, and use modern AI-assisted development tools to ship better software, faster, without sacrificing quality.

If you’ve led serious Java/C++ systems in demanding environments and want more ownership, we want to talk to you.

What You'll Work On

You’ll lead core software engineering efforts across complex, distributed mission systems:

Enterprise-scale software products supporting critical communications and networking
System modernization and refactoring of existing capabilities
New feature development across distributed and multi-threaded applications
Cloud and hybrid-cloud deployments for demanding environments
Containerized services and orchestration at scale
APIs and integration points across databases and subsystems
DevSecOps, CI/CD, and automated testing practices
Resilient, cyber-aware software for DoD and telecom-style domains

You’ll be hands-on with technologies like Java, C++, Spring Boot, REST APIs, Linux, Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS GovCloud, and modern DBs.

This is where high-end software engineering meets real-world mission constraints.

What You'll Be Doing

Providing technical leadership across the engineering team
Taking ownership of software products from concept through sustainment
Designing and evolving software architectures and system designs
Driving development across the full software lifecycle
Mentoring junior engineers and elevating engineering standards
Leveraging AI-assisted tools to accelerate design, coding, testing, and debugging
Implementing and maintaining RESTful services and back-end components
Developing multi-threaded applications in Java and/or C++
Designing and integrating with relational or distributed databases
Building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, including Jenkins-based workflows
Developing, packaging, and deploying containerized applications
Supporting Kubernetes, cloud, and hybrid-cloud deployments in secure environments

What We're Looking For

Bachelor’s degree and 9+ years of relevant experience, OR a graduate degree and 7+ years, OR 13+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree
Active Secret clearance
Experience across the full software development lifecycle
Proven technical leadership and ownership mindset
Strong software architecture and system design skills
Experience with Agile software development methodologies
10+ years of professional software engineering experience (preferred)
Strong Java and/or C++ development experience
Experience with Java Spring Boot and REST API development
Linux development environment and multi-threaded application experience

The Experience That Will Really Get Our Attention

You’re the engineer people turn to when a distributed system is misbehaving in production and the stakes are high. You see the big picture, but you’re just as comfortable deep in a core service, a CI/CD pipeline, or a tricky concurrency bug.

Ideally you’ve built and deployed containerized, cyber-aware applications into cloud or hybrid-cloud environments for DoD, SATCOM, networking, gateway, or telecom-like systems – and you know how DevSecOps and automated testing keep them reliable.

High-signal technologies and domains: Java • C++ • Spring Boot • REST APIs • Linux • Multi-threading • Database design and integration • CI/CD • Jenkins • Docker • Kubernetes • Kubernetes administration • Cloud • Hybrid-cloud • AWS GovCloud • DevSecOps • Automated testing frameworks • Cybersecurity-aware development • Distributed systems • Enterprise-scale applications • DoD • SATCOM • Networking • Gateway • Telecommunications

Why This Opportunity?

This isn’t a narrow feature factory role. You’ll be the technical adult in the room, steering multiple products that directly support complex, high-value missions.

You’ll own architecture decisions, raise the engineering bar, and shape how AI-assisted development, DevSecOps, and cloud-native patterns are used across the stack.

If you want your next move to combine serious technical depth, real leadership, and visible impact, this is that role.

Important Requirements

Active Secret clearance is required.

Interested?

If you’re ready to lead high-impact systems and still stay close to the code, let’s get you in the conversation.
