Software Engineer (New Grad - Construction Tech Platform)
Company: Agave (YC W22)
Location: San Francisco, CA (FiDi)
Employment Type: Full-time
Work Arrangement: On-site 5 days a week
About The Role
Our client is a well-funded, profitable YC-backed startup (YC W22) modernizing the
$12 trillion global construction industry. They solve a massive problem: connecting fragmented, siloed software systems—many of which are 20-40 years old, on-prem, and lack modern APIs. They build proprietary APIs to connect these systems and wrap them in a modern UI to automate critical work, like syncing financial data between job sites and accounting offices. The company has over
200 paying customers, is
cash-flow positive, and is backed by investors like
Accel and leaders from Procore and Autodesk.
They are seeking a
world-class New Grad Software Engineer who loves
simplifying complex systems, unifying fragmented data, and building high-scale backend systems. This role offers high ownership and the chance to work on unique technical challenges that exist at the intersection of old-school enterprise and modern cloud infrastructure.
What You'll Be Doing (Interesting Technical Challenges)
Your core work will be split between backend and full-stack development, with a focus on core infrastructure:
- Unification: Unifying dozens to hundreds of fragmented, heterogeneous systems under a single, generic API standard defined by the company (covering data models, authentication, and features like filtering)
- On-Prem Connectivity: Connecting with many types of legacy on-prem systems (SQL-based, DLL-based, API-based) and innovating to provide secure, real-time communication and webhooks where they don't natively exist
- Scale & Speed: Handling millions of API requests per day and building elegant caching layers to efficiently store and retrieve large amounts of data, reducing latency
- Operational Excellence: Creating a reliable, SLA-enforced API layer on top of old, unreliable systems ("building a skyscraper on quicksand"). This involves building creative, scalable testing frameworks to catch edge cases across 1,000+ endpoints
- Full-Stack Development: Building internal front-end applications (Sync, Analytics) that "dog-food" their own APIs, ensuring the APIs are world-class
- Variety: Each new integration presents a unique "archaeological" and engineering challenge, requiring deep research into its specific nuances
Requirements
- 0-1 years of experience as a backend or full-stack software engineer (New Grad level)
- Must be able to work independently without much guidance
- Loves simplifying complex systems and unifying fragmented data
- Must be willing to work in-person 5 days/week in San Francisco
Benefits
- Salary: $130K - $240K
- Equity: 0.05% - 0.20%
- Visa Sponsorship: Available (TN, OPT, H1B Transfer) for US and CAN candidates
- Benefits include: 90% healthcare coverage, 401k match (up to 4%), sizable relocation bonus, on-site gym, and daily DoorDash stipend for dinner
