Purpose of the Position
The engineering team at Thorlabs Measurement Systems designs, develops, and maintains products and systems for the metrology market. This position plays a critical role in bridging the gap between design engineering and the production floor by improving designs, documentation, and quality control for existing assemblies and components. While this position is based in Sparta, NJ, up to 10% travel may be required to customer locations and other Thorlabs sites.
Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:
- Serves as the primary engineering contact for the production team, providing technical support and troubleshooting as required
- Identifies, prioritizes, and implements improvements to existing designs and assembly processes
- Maintains and improves product documentation, including drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and assembly procedures
- Coordinates with design engineers to correct manufacturing print errors and initiate engineering change orders
- Provides training and guidance to assembly personnel on updated processes, documentation, and inspection techniques
- Assists with prototype builds or new product introductions to ensure manufacturability and smooth transition to production
- Ensures feedback from production and inspection is clearly communicated and integrated into engineering documentation
- Develops and executes inspection processes for in-house machined components and assembled products
- Audits and documents assembly processes to ensure adherence to established methods and standards
In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:
- Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures
- Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments

Requirements
Qualifications
Experience:
- 1 year of engineering work experience preferred
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD modeling software
- Proficiency in basic Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, & PowerPoint)
- Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, & controls issues
- Ability to interpret follow, edit, and provide feedback on written work instructions
- Experience working with hand tools, power tools and diagnostic equipment
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and organization skills
- Ability to work well in a team environment and comply with high quality standards
- Ability to function autonomously with minimal supervision
- Flexibility/adaptability in a fast-paced & dynamic environment
Physical Activities:
- Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee may lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. Employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, it may be noisy at times. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The required PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants and solvents, and safe operation of job-related equipment and tools
Salary range for this position is $70,000 - $94,000 depending on experience
