Assistant Designer, Design Team – ASTR The Label

ASTR The Label’s Design team is at the heart of our brand, driving our commitment to beautiful, authentic designs crafted with quality materials and construction. We are actively seeking a talented and driven entry-level Assistant Designer to become a vital part of our expanding design team. Reporting directly to the Lead Designer, this position offers a unique opportunity to significantly contribute to our creative process.
Responsibilities:
As an Assistant Designer, you will play a crucial role across the entire design lifecycle, from ideation to final production. Your responsibilities will include:
Design & Development Support:
- Concept & Sketching: Work alongside the design team to research market trends, inspirations, and new colors. Develop initial flat sketches and concepts using Adobe Illustrator.
- Technical Design: Create comprehensive tech packs with detailed instructions
- Execution & Detail: Help execute designer concepts with critical attention to detail and a sense of urgency to meet all departmental deadlines.
- Collaboration: Correspond with designers throughout development, updating sketches and providing corrective instructions as needed.
- Sample Management: Assist in reviewing lab dips and print strike-offs. Organize and track inspiration, vendor, and development samples.
Product Information & Organization:
- Data Management: Manage development charts, including setting up styles in the ERP system. Email organization by vendors.
- Resource Management: Assist the Associate Designer with fabric organization and maintaining the color catalog. Create and organize fabric and trim binders seasonally.
- Documentation: Document and take detailed notes in cross-functional weekly meetings and milestone meetings.
Operational & Administrative Support:
- Meeting Preparation: Assist weekly proto reviews by gathering and prepping samples. Assist in creating seasonal concept boards for presentations/milestone meetings.
- Logistics: Set up vendor appointments, create and fulfill gifting packages, and manage shipping labels and packages for internal teams.
- Calendar Adherence: Adhere to design calendar deadlines and timelines, ensuring all tasks are completed in a timely manner.
- Costing & Sourcing: Compile pre-costing information for pre-production tech packs. Manage fabric inventory and library, coordinating fabric counter sourcing for costing. Collaborate with vendors to globally source and develop new fabrics and styles within budgetary guidelines.
- Communication: Effectively communicate with and provide accurate, clear information to vendors, product development, and tech teams via tech packs and emails.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design or a related field.
- 1-3 years of industry experience in fashion design is preferred.
- A strong online portfolio demonstrating your design work and proficiency in Adobe Illustrator created sketches is required.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and strong CAD skills.
- Knowledge of garment construction, patternmaking, draping, and sewing.
- A strong fashion aesthetic and conceptual skills, with the ability to uphold the Designer's vision for the collection.
- Timely sense of trends and market research encompassing color, fabric, and silhouette.
- Experience/knowledge in fabric sourcing, technical design, and fabric development.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with strong follow-up abilities.
- Eager and driven to learn, with the ability to multitask and take on additional projects as needed.
