Company Description
For Them is a black trans-owned cultural platform that reaches LGBTQ+ communities where they are—primarily through social media. We provide vital information, resources, and connection points for people seeking community, wellness guidance, and authentic representation. Through our digital presence and innovative product offerings, we foster radical self-expression and create spaces for individuals to embrace their true selves. Our mission is to be a trusted source of support and celebration for the LGBTQ+ community, meeting critical needs for visibility, education, and belonging in the digital landscape.
Role Description
This is a part-time hybrid position for a Social Media Manager/Assistant. You'll work on developing and executing social media strategies, creating engaging content, and building authentic community connections across platforms.
Responsibilities include researching trending topics and formats, developing content concepts and scripts, coordinating content production (including filming coordination), editing video content, managing posting schedules across channels, and analysing the performance. You'll collaborate closely with team members who are compelling on camera but time-limited, translating their vision into consistent digital presence. The ideal candidate can work independently, move quickly from trend identification to execution, and understands how to build brands in the LGBTQ+ creator economy.
This role will start at 20hrs per week, paid at $30/hr. We hope with the right person this will grow into a full-time position within a year.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in social media content creation and short-form video editing (TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts)
- Strong skills in trend identification and content strategy development
- Demonstrated experience and success creating content—whether for yourself, on behalf of an influencer, or for a brand
- Ability to write scripts and talking points that capture authentic voice
- Understanding of analytics tools for measuring social media performance
- Efficient project management and administrative planning skills
- Ability to engage authentically with LGBTQ+ communities and reflect shared values
- Experience commissioning or coordinating content creators is a plus
We strongly encourage applications from candidates from underrepresented backgrounds. Drive, commercial instincts, and hunger for growth matter more to us than traditional credentials—show us your ambition and work ethic through your application.
How to Apply
Please submit the following:
Resume/CV
Experience (Required)
- Link to social media accounts you have managed—personal, brand, or professional
- For each account: specify your role, key responsibilities, and timeframe of involvement
- List all short-form content platforms you have experience creating for (TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, etc.)
- Identify your strongest platform for driving growth and explain why
+ anything else that's creative and wonderful that you'd like us to see!
Portfolio (Required)
- Link to 3-10 short-form content pieces you've created that you're most proud of, and that best demonstrate your skill as a social media manager
- For each piece, annotate exactly what you were responsible for (e.g., concept development, scripting, filming, editing, scheduling, all of the above)
- Give us insight into why it performed well and why you're proud of it
- Tell us learnings you took from it (if there are any!) and if there's anything you'd improve it if you were to go back and do it again.
Case Study (Required) Hypothetical scenario: Kylo Freeman, founder of For Them, has blocked out 30 minutes to film content for you to edit and schedule. You won't be present to film, so you need to facilitate remotely. He films self-tapes for acting all the time, is very comfortable in front of the camera, is daring, and has someone who can film for him IRL.
Submit a prep document to remotely facilitate this filming session. Your document should show the trends you’ve identified for him to film, provide clear direction, and maximize limited filming time. Include:
- 1-3 current trending concepts (sounds, formats, or concepts)
- Instructions to facilitate each trend remotely
- Explanation for why you think each trend would perform well
- Posting strategy: specify which account(s) and platform(s) each piece should be posted to (you have access to @forthem, @kylofreeman, @autostraddle, @goodboyspod accounts across all platforms, and can use collab posts, reposts, or any other posting strategy)
Submit all materials to em@forthem.com with subject line "{your name}- Social Media Manager application"
