Summary
We are seeking a dedicated On Call Sound/Light Technician to support our events and activities at Therapeutic Living Centers for the Blind. This role is vital in enhancing the sensory experience for our participants and ensuring smooth technical operations during various programs in California.
Position Summary
The Sound/Light Technician supports the artistic vision of the theater by designing, operating, and maintaining all sound and lighting elements for productions, rehearsals, rentals, and special events in a black box theater environment. This role provides technical expertise, ensures equipment functionality, and partners closely with the director, stage manager, designers, performers, and guest organizations to deliver high-quality productions that are safe, engaging, and professional, on an as needed basis.
Job Responsibilities:
Technical Support & Safety
Assist with load-ins, strikes, and general stage preparation.
Troubleshoot audio/lighting issues before and during events.
Uphold safety protocols for all equipment, wiring, and rigging.
Train or guide volunteers, students, or staff on basic equipment operation, as needed
Lighting
Install, focus, patch, and strike lighting equipment for productions and events.
Operate lighting consoles from the designated technical control booth during rehearsals and performances.
Interpret lighting plots and collaborate with designers and directors to achieve desired effects.
Maintain lighting instruments, boards, dimmers, and rigging hardware.
Ensure proper color gels, gobos, and LED programming as needed.
Sound
Set up, mix, and operate sound reinforcement systems for live theater, music, and spoken word performances.
Operate audio systems from the control booth, including mixers, playback devices, microphones, and monitors.
Assist with recording needs (e.g., archival recordings, event capture).
Program and playback show cues using theatrical sound software/hardware.
Projection & Media
Set up, operate, and maintain projector and basic projection systems for performances, presentations, and special events.
Coordinate projection cues with lighting and sound elements when required.
Assist with basic troubleshooting of projection and media playback systems.
Collaboration & Administration
Attend design meetings, production meetings, and technical rehearsals.
Maintain equipment inventory, recommend repairs or purchases.
Assist with theater rentals; set up equipment per client needs.
Support flexible theater seating configurations and staging layouts.
Complete other duties as requested by the supervisor or Director.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Technical Theater, Audio Production, Stagecraft, Lighting Design, or a related field preferred.
Previous experience in technical theater, live event lighting, or sound operation required.
Strong working knowledge of lighting and audio control systems (examples: ETC lighting consoles, QLab, Dante, digital/analog mixers).
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, plots, and cue sheets.
Ability to lift and move equipment (70+ lbs) and safely work at heights (ladders, lifts).
Flexible availability for evenings, weekends, and production schedules.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Strong attention to detail and ability to seek help when needed.
Communicate and work professionally and cooperatively with others; including staff and people supported especially during stressful situations.
Successfully pass all post offer, pre-employment screening requirements, including criminal background check, physical exam, and provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

- Ability to complete and pass basic exams after training.
- Maintain a valid CA driver’s license with a driving record that is acceptable for TLC insurance coverage.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position is primarily housed in an open air-conditioned classroom. Several times a week there are outside activities and community integration and therefore the working conditions are subject to weather elements, i.e. sun, wind, rain. Occasional driving of consumers is required including assisting them into and out of vehicle for community integration outings and supervising consumers’ safety while in the community. Several times a week, there are swimming classes that require getting into an enclosed, heated swimming pool and/or Jacuzzi. This position can be moderately physical. There is frequent standing, bending, sitting for periods of time, and fast-paced walking. Assisting consumers in wheelchairs, with walkers, gait-belts that require pushing, supporting and guiding. Frequent lifting of weight that varies between 10-100 pounds. On occasion, consumers may become physical including but not limited to hitting, kicking, grabbing, and biting.
Frequently, you are exposed to consumers’ bodily fluids which can include saliva (drool), blood, urine, fecal matter. Stringent Universal Health Precautions are practiced.
