Job Overview
Viva Windows is seeking an experienced contract structural / field engineer to support residential window and door projects on a project-based basis. This role focuses on field evaluations, service issue analysis, and providing structural insight for retrofit and modification projects in existing homes.
Most assignments involve on-site evaluation and professional judgment rather than full structural redesign. Typical requests include determining why a door or window is not operating correctly, assessing whether an issue is related to installation, framing, or structural movement, and advising on structural considerations when new or enlarged openings are added to existing structures.
This is an as-needed consulting role intended for an independent engineer comfortable working on a 1099 basis.
Responsibilities
- Conduct on-site field inspections for residential window and door installations
- Evaluate existing framing, headers, load paths, and structural conditions
- Diagnose service issues such as misalignment, binding, or operational concerns
- Provide structural insight for new or modified window and door openings
- Prepare concise written summaries or reports when required
- Support permitting or inspection documentation on select projects
What This Role Is Not
- This is not a full-time position
- This role does not involve product testing, certification, or regulatory submissions
- Most projects do not require stamped calculations or full structural plans
Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) preferred (structural, civil, or related discipline)
- Experience with residential construction and retrofit projects
- Practical understanding of wood framing systems and load transfer
- Ability to work independently as a 1099 contractor
- Strong communication skills with homeowners, installers, and project managers
Compensation
Compensation is project-based. Typical projects range from $500 to $3,000 or more depending on scope, documentation requirements, and liability level.
Basic field evaluations or service issue reviews generally fall in the $500 to $750 range. Written reports, structural recommendations, or sealed documents are negotiated based on scope.
