Lead Full Stack Engineer (AI-Focused, Hands-On)
Location: Remote
Type: Long term contract
Overview
We’re looking for a hands-on Lead Full Stack Engineer to help build and scale a consumer-facing, AI-powered web platform that helps users discover the best insurance options for their individual needs. This role sits within a fast-moving, startup-style subsidiary backed by a large enterprise, offering the agility of a startup with the scale and impact of an established organization.
This is a true player-coach role—you’ll spend roughly 60% of your time writing production code while also helping lead and elevate a small group of engineers. You’ll take real ownership of features and systems, influence technical direction, and help integrate AI-driven capabilities that directly improve the customer experience.
What You’ll Be Working On
- A modern, consumer-facing website that allows users to input personal information and receive personalized plan recommendations
- AI-powered features that improve discovery, personalization, and engagement
- High-traffic experiences with peak usage during enrollment periods
- A platform that prioritizes usability, performance, and reliability for a broad and diverse user base
What You’ll Do
- Spend the majority of your time designing and writing high-quality, maintainable code
- Own features and initiatives end-to-end—from idea through delivery and iteration
- Help establish and reinforce engineering best practices, including Test-Driven Development (TDD)
- Lead by example while supporting multiple small development pods without micromanaging
- Introduce and help teams adopt new tools, technologies, and AI-driven solutions
- Collaborate closely with product, design, and engineering peers in an agile, startup-like environment
- Participate in and promote code reviews, pairing, and thoughtful technical discussions
- Act as a force multiplier by unblocking engineers and enabling teams to move quickly and independently
What We’re Looking For
- A strong engineer who wants to keep coding and doesn’t want to step away from hands-on work
- A self-driven leader with a clear sense of ownership and accountability
- Someone comfortable operating in ambiguity and helping shape direction
- An engineer who asks thoughtful questions, explains their approach, and communicates clearly
- Curiosity and genuine interest in AI and how it can improve real customer experiences
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience building and architecting full stack web applications
- Strong experience with modern JavaScript and TypeScript
- Front-end experience with modern frameworks (Vue preferred)
- Back-end experience with Node.js and REST APIs
- Exposure to .NET / C# environments
- Hands-on experience practicing Test-Driven Development (TDD)
- Experience working in agile teams with code reviews, pairing, and collaboration
- Strong communication skills and ability to talk through technical decisions
Nice to Have
- Experience integrating AI/ML-driven features into customer-facing products
- Experience working in startup or greenfield environments
- Background in event-driven or microservices architectures
- A history of side projects or initiatives that went beyond core job responsibilities
Why This Role
- High ownership and visibility
- True hands-on leadership (not a people-manager-only role)
- Opportunity to build impactful, AI-driven customer experiences
- Startup energy with enterprise backing
- A team with high standards that values curiosity, collaboration, and quality
