JOB TITLE: ASSISTANT CONTROLLER
Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Assistant Controller to support the financial operations of our busy automotive dealership. This position plays a key role in maintaining accurate financial reporting, ensuring compliance with GAAP standards, and supporting the Controller in overseeing the accounting department.
The Assistant Controller will be responsible for daily accounting functions, financial reconciliations, payroll and benefits administration, tax compliance, and dealership inventory oversight. This role will step into the Controller position when necessary and assist in ensuring the integrity and accuracy of all financial reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations
- Assist in overseeing accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP
- Support month-end and year-end closing processes
- Clean and maintain accounting schedules and reconciliations
- Perform bank reconciliations and ensure accuracy of cash accounts
- Cap and finalize vehicle deals in the dealership management system
- Submit payments for F&I products
- Assist in processing factory open statement
- Assist in processing body shop invoices and ensure proper posting
Payroll & Human Resources Support
- Process payroll accurately and timely
- Administer employee benefits
- Track and maintain employee attendance records
- Ensure compliance with payroll tax regulations
Tax & Compliance
- Process and file multi-state sales tax
- Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local tax requirements
- Maintain compliance with internal controls and accounting best practices
Leadership & Oversight
- Assist in supervising accounting office personnel
- Support the Controller in maintaining strong internal controls and financial accuracy
- Assist in implementing and improving accounting procedures
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
- 3–5+ years of accounting experience; automotive dealership experience strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of GAAP
- Experience with dealership management systems (DMS) preferred
- Knowledge of multi-state sales tax processing
- Payroll and benefits administration experience
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
- Leadership capability and ability to step into a supervisory role when needed
