Duration: Initial ~20 hours (with potential for extension)
Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced Data Center Design Consultant to support the design and planning of a 14-rack, high-performance data center environment. This role will focus on developing a comprehensive design package covering cooling, power, structured cabling, and monitoring systems, while coordinating closely with the client and their architect.
This is a hands-on consulting role requiring deep expertise in modern data center design, including hot/cold aisle containment, in-row cooling, and high-density infrastructure planning, with an emphasis on future scalability (including liquid cooling readiness).
Key Responsibilities
1. Design Consulting & Site Assessment
- Conduct a technical site assessment of the existing space
- Review provided floor plans/layouts and validate feasibility
- Document environmental constraints, risks, and opportunities
- Develop a Data Center Infrastructure Requirements document
- Coordinate with the client’s architect to integrate DC-specific requirements
2. Data Center Layout & Space Planning
- Create 2D/3D CAD rack layouts for (14) OCP ORv3 44U racks
- Design hot/cold aisle containment strategy (HAC)
- Plan rack placement, airflow, and white space optimization
- Ensure scalability and future readiness for liquid cooling
- Maintain high-end “showcase” aesthetic design standards
3. Cooling & Mechanical Engineering
- Design in-row cooling architecture (N+1 configuration)
- Develop CFD modeling simulations to validate airflow and eliminate hotspots
- Create piping/plumbing schematics (chilled water or DX systems)
- Ensure thermal efficiency for high-density compute environments
4. Electrical & Power Engineering
- Specify and design:
- Intelligent rack PDUs (L6-20, 20A/250V)
- In-rack UPS systems (6kVA units)
- Develop electrical one-line diagrams from utility to rack level
- Plan power distribution and redundancy strategy
5. Structured Cabling & Connectivity Design
- Develop full structured cabling design (fiber + copper)
- Create:
- Rack elevations and connectivity matrices
- Overhead cable tray and pathway design
- Fiber architecture using Corning EDGE systems
- Cat6a copper distribution and patching strategy
- Design labeling standards and cable management systems
- Produce detailed cable schedules and installation blueprints
6. Monitoring & DCIM Design
- Design sensor deployment (temperature, humidity, leak detection)
- Architect DCIM/monitoring dashboard framework
- Enable full visibility of power, cooling, and connectivity systems
- Support “showcase” visualization requirements for client tours
7. Documentation & Deliverables
- Produce full design package including:
- Bill of Materials (BOM)
- Construction-ready drawings
- Submittal documentation
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- As-built drawings (post-implementation)
- Identify long-lead equipment and procurement recommendations
8. Coordination & Project Support
- Collaborate with:
- Client stakeholders
- Architect
- Contractors and vendors
- Provide optional project management support during build phase
- Assist with installation validation and commissioning guidance (if required)
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in data center design or infrastructure engineering
- Proven expertise in:
- High-density data center environments
- Cooling systems (in-row, containment strategies)
- Power distribution and redundancy
- Structured cabling (fiber and copper)
- Strong experience with CAD design tools (AutoCAD, Revit, or similar)
- Experience producing construction-ready design documentation
- Ability to work onsite in Mountain View, CA
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with OCP ORv3 rack environments
- Familiarity with Corning EDGE fiber systems
- Experience designing “showcase” or client-facing data centers
