As Brightwater continues to grow, we are seeking a Controller to lead our accounting function with precision, judgment, and a strong understanding of senior living operations and real estate.
Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations for Brightwater and its managed entities, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and timely month-end close processes. This role partners closely with executive leadership, operations, asset management, and ownership groups, and plays a key role in scaling financial infrastructure as the organization grows.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring both technical accounting expertise and the ability to build, mentor, and manage a high-performing accounting team.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Operations
- Manage day-to-day accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, and cash management
- Oversee resident accounting, rent rolls, and service revenue recognition
- Ensure proper accounting for leases, management fees, intercompany transactions, and capital expenditures
Financial Reporting & Close
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes across multiple legal entities
- Prepare and review consolidated financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting for ownership groups, lenders, and internal stakeholders
- Oversee balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, and variance analysis
Controls & Compliance
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and provincial regulations (U.S. and Canada)
Systems & Process Improvement
- Serve as a key financial systems owner (e.g., Yardi or similar property management/accounting systems)
- Drive process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
- Partner with operations and leadership to improve financial visibility and decision-making
Leadership & Collaboration
- Build, lead, and mentor the accounting team
- Collaborate closely with operations, HR, asset management, and executive leadership
- Provide financial insight and guidance to support strategic initiatives, acquisitions, and new developments
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility
- Strong GAAP knowledge and financial reporting expertise
- Experience with multi-entity accounting structures
- Advanced proficiency in accounting systems and Excel
- High attention to detail with strong judgment and problem-solving skills
