The Big Idea
Dettinger Bluff Pastures is a 160-acre diversified farm in the Driftless Region of western Wisconsin. We’re building a direct-to-consumer brand from the ground up — grass-fed South Poll beef, a market garden supplying a local supper club, timber milling, and an event venue on the bluffs above the Mississippi River.
We need a content creator who understands that the content IS the marketing. There is no ad budget. There is no agency. The YouTube channel, the Instagram, the TikTok — that’s how we build demand. By the time our first beef boxes ship to the Twin Cities, thousands of people should already know the farm, the land, the cattle, and the story. They’re buying because they’ve been watching it happen.
Think Polyface Farm, Beefmaker, Greg Judy — operations where the content created demand that outpaced supply. That’s what we’re building. The farm is the product. The story is the sales engine. You’re building the engine.
What You’ll CaptureThe Farm Build (Year One Story Arc)
- Breaking ground: fence posts going in, raised beds being built, garden taking shape, deer fence install, corral construction
- First cattle arriving: 12 bred South Poll heifers on pasture for the first time — this is the origin story
- Garden to table: planting, growing, harvesting, loading totes, delivering to Beedle’s Bar & Restaurant
- Timber and milling: black locust posts on the WoodMizer, building corral rails, sawmill operations
- Rotational grazing: moving cattle to fresh paddocks, the land healing, grass growing back
- Seasons changing: spring planting through fall harvest, winter feeding, the rhythm of the farm year
The Brand Story (Long-Term Content)
- Who we are: Jerry’s vision, the family, the land, the “why” behind Dettinger Bluff Pastures
- How we raise beef: grass-fed, no grain, rotational grazing, South Poll genetics, animal welfare
- Farm-to-table pipeline: vegetables from garden to Beedle’s kitchen, beef from pasture to plate
- The property: Mississippi River bluffs, 93-acre forest, Driftless Region beauty, drone footage
- Educational content: why rotational grazing works, how drip irrigation feeds 40 beds, what makes South Poll cattle different
Venue & Property Marketing
- Capture the venue and property for marketing: scenic shots, drone footage, event spaces, seasonal beauty. This sells the venue — couples hire their own wedding photographer/videographer.
- Create venue promotional videos: property tours, walkthrough of event spaces, testimonial clips from past clients
- Photograph and film the property in all seasons — the venue looks different in spring, summer, and fall. Build a library of visual assets for the website and social media.
- Drone footage of the property for venue marketing
- Document farm dinners, burger nights, and on-farm gatherings for social media and website content
Bookkeeping & Admin (5–10 hours/week)
This role includes day-to-day bookkeeping and administrative support for the farm operation. You don’t need to be a CPA — you need to be organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable with numbers. This work can be done remotely on your own schedule.
- Record income and expenses in QuickBooks Online across enterprise streams (beef, produce, timber, events, rental)
- Reconcile bank and credit card statements monthly
- Process and track invoices for Beedle’s restaurant produce deliveries
- Track NRCS cost-share reimbursements ($88K across fence, water, and rotational grazing programs)
- Coordinate with OnPay payroll system for farm manager and PT labor payments
- Manage vendor payments, track PT labor hours, and maintain receipt documentation
- Prepare monthly profit and loss summary by enterprise stream for owner review
- Organize year-end financial records for CPA / tax preparer (Schedule F, Form 943)
- General admin: manage Shopify orders, respond to email inquiries, manage venue inquiry responses, maintain farm document files
Content Strategy You’ll ExecuteShort-Form (Instagram Reels, TikTok, Facebook)
- 3–5 posts per week: quick farm clips, satisfying work shots, before/after, animal moments, harvest clips
- Trending audio, hooks, and formats adapted to farm content
- Build followers who become future customers — every post is a touchpoint with a future beef buyer
Long-Form (YouTube)
- 2–4 videos per month: farm build updates, project walkthroughs, educational deep dives, day-in-the-life
- Series potential: “Building the Herd,” “Garden to Restaurant,” “From Timber to Table”
- YouTube is the long game — these videos sell beef 2 years from now to someone who discovers the channel
Product & Brand Photography
- Product shots for future DTC beef sales: cuts on butcher paper, boxes, farm branding
- Garden produce photography for Beedle’s marketing and farm website
- Property and venue photos for website and marketing
- Team and lifestyle photos for website, social, and press
Why This Matters
Most farms sell a commodity. We’re selling a story. The content you create doesn’t just document what’s happening — it creates demand for everything we produce. When someone in Minneapolis sees our cattle moving to fresh pasture on Instagram, watches the garden harvest on YouTube, and then sees “Dettinger Bluff Pastures beef box — now shipping” — they’re already sold. The content did the selling months before the product was ready.
That’s why this role exists. Not to post pretty pictures. To build a content engine that makes demand constantly push the operation forward.
QualificationsRequired
- Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of film, communications, marketing, agriculture, or related program
- Can shoot and edit compelling video (iPhone/DSLR/mirrorless + editing software)
- Proficient with at least one editing platform: Adobe Premiere, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve, or CapCut
- Understands social media algorithms, hooks, and what makes people stop scrolling
- Own transportation to the farm (rural location)
- Comfortable outdoors in all conditions — mud, heat, cold, early mornings, late sunsets
- Self-directed — you see the shot, you grab it, you edit it, you post it. No one tells you what to film.
Preferred
- Drone operation (FAA Part 107 certification or willing to obtain)
- Photography skills (product, event, lifestyle)
- Experience with agriculture, rural life, or outdoor content
- Understanding of YouTube SEO, thumbnail design, and channel growth
- Graphic design basics (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite)
What You Get
- A real brand to build from day one — not class projects, not spec work. A real farm, real products, real customers.
- Creative ownership — you shape the voice, the look, the feel of the Dettinger Bluff Pastures brand
- A portfolio that stands out: farm content, venue marketing, product photography, brand storytelling across every platform
- Flexible schedule around classes — most content is captured on farm visits, editing is done on your time
- $500–$750/month stipend + college credit coordination
- One of the most visually stunning properties in western Wisconsin to shoot on — bluffs, river, timber, cattle, gardens, sunsets
- Potential to grow from intern to part-time contractor to full-time as the brand scales (see Growth Path below)
- A front-row seat to a farm startup — you’ll learn how a real agricultural business is built from scratch
Growth Path
This role is designed to grow with the farm. As revenue increases and the brand gains traction, the position scales up:
- Phase 1 — Intern (months 1–6): 10–20 hours/week content + 5–10 hours/week bookkeeping/admin, $750–$1,250/month stipend. Build the social media presence, establish the brand voice, capture the farm build story. Handle day-to-day bookkeeping and admin. Learn the operation inside and out.
- Phase 2 — Part-Time Contractor (months 6–12): 15–25 hours/week, paid hourly or project rate. Take on website management, e-commerce content, and venue marketing. Growing the brand across all platforms.
- Phase 3 — Full-Time (year 2+): As DTC beef sales launch, venue bookings increase, and the brand grows, this becomes a full-time content and marketing role. Manage all digital presence, e-commerce, email marketing, and brand content. Compensation scales with farm revenue.
The transition from each phase is based on performance, audience growth, and farm revenue — not a fixed calendar. If the content drives results, the role grows. Simple.
Website & E-Commerce (Shopify)
As part of Phase 2, the content creator will help build and manage the Dettinger Bluff Pastures website on Shopify. This is where content converts to revenue. The website serves multiple functions:
- DTC Beef Sales: Online store for beef boxes, individual cuts, and subscriptions shipping to the Twin Cities and beyond. Product photography, descriptions, and checkout flow.
- Event Venue: Venue gallery, property photos, inquiry form, and general venue information. Couples and event planners find us here first.
- The Farm Story: About page, blog/journal, photo galleries, embedded YouTube videos. The website is the home base that all social media drives traffic to.
- Email List: Build and manage an email subscriber list from day one. When beef boxes are ready to ship, you have a list of buyers waiting. Shopify integrates directly with email marketing tools.
Shopify experience is a plus but not required — the platform is intuitive and we’ll learn it together. What matters is understanding that the website is where followers become customers.
