This Product Designer role sits at the intersection of research and development, manufacturing, and customer customization. The position focuses on transforming early-stage concepts into fully manufacturable designs while supporting a business model that emphasizes tailored solutions for customers.
Job Description
As a Product Designer, you will take product concepts from the R&D team and develop them into production-ready mechanical designs. This role plays a key part in customizing proprietary products in collaboration with sales and engineering, ensuring designs meet both customer needs and manufacturing requirements.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing detailed mechanical designs that translate prototypes or models into manufacturable parts
- Creating production drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and specifications
- Performing design investigations, feasibility studies, and analyses for new or modified products
- Producing and modifying CAD models for prototypes and manufacturing use
- Evaluating prototypes and recommending design improvements related to performance, safety, reliability, and marketability
- Researching components, including cost analysis, for new or revised product designs
- Recommending and implementing design changes to address customer requirements or field issues
- Reviewing and processing Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) by updating drawings, BOMs, and specifications
- Supporting cross-functional collaboration with sales, manufacturing, and other internal teams
- Assisting in cross-training efforts as needed to support overall manufacturing efficiency
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Product Design, Mechanical Design, or a related engineering field
- 1–3 years of related professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience developing production-ready designs from prototypes or conceptual models
- Ability to create detailed production drawings, specifications, and bills of materials
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and design principles
- Proficiency with 3D modeling software (SolidWorks preferred; similar CAD tools acceptable)
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and industry documentation
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to apply mathematical and basic physics concepts
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing customized or made-to-order products
- Familiarity with evaluating product feasibility and manufacturability
- Prior involvement in engineering change management processes
- Experience collaborating directly with sales teams or customer-facing stakeholders
