Position Overview
This position will manage the accounting operations related to ceded and assumed reinsurance, including premiums, losses and commissions. Responsible for the Statutory Annual and Quarterly Statements. This role supports the Corporate Controller and Accounting Manager for both the financial close process and internal controls related to reinsurance activities. Coordinates with the Accounting team as well as the Financial Planning and Analysis team to ensure accuracy and timeliness of reinsurance data and reporting
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for daily reinsurance accounting tasks, ensuring timely completion of month-end, quarterly, and annual closing activities.
- Calculate and prepare/review journal entries related to premiums, losses and commissions to be assumed and ceded each month under the Company's reinsurance contracts.
- Responsible for the Statutory Annual and Quarterly Statements, including preparation of the reinsurance-related Schedules F and P as well as preparation of Statutory and GAAP footnote disclosures related to premium and losses.
- Monitor reinsurance recoverable and ceded payable balance details to ensure accurate reconciliation and timely collection or settlement.
- Assists with the development of closing schedules and coordinates effort to meet deadlines
- Prepare and maintain internal and external reports in support of reinsurance agreements.
- Coordinate workloads to meet deliverables and balance ongoing operational and project-related priorities.
- Participate in a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and collaboration within the reinsurance accounting function.
- Build and maintain positive, collaborative relationships across all levels & functions. Appropriately balances individual and department interests. Shows initiative and departmental support by accepting and fulfilling departmental objectives. Promotes mutual ownership of ideas and actions; shares knowledge with others. Upward communication, keeping management informed.
- Reasonably estimates task effort, identifies interim target dates and deliverables, and schedules activities to achieve project objectives on time. Reports project status at regular intervals or as appropriate. Keeps Corporate Controller informed. Manages multiple, concurrent tasks and projects as assigned.
- Understands how work-product impacts other departments, and external customers. Listens to, defines and anticipates the needs of internal and external customers. Suggests approaches and solutions to customer problems, while keeping both long-term and short-term perspective in mind. Adapts priorities, as appropriate, to meet customer requirements.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required. CPA preferred.
· Strong understanding of GAAP and statutory accounting principles.
· Minimum of 10 years of accounting experience with 5+ years related to reinsurance accounting required.
