Pasadena, CA
GuRu Wireless Inc. is leading the innovation in high frequency RF wireless power transfer systems and is developing one-of-a-kind long-range wireless power solutions for UAVs. We are building a team of passionate thinkers and doers to support this vision. If you are highly motivated and interested in tackling the most challenging problems, we’d love to hear from you.
We are looking for a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to design, prototype, build, test, and iterate mechanical and electromechanical systems. In this role, you will work closely with technicians on the shop floor, contributing across mechanical design, thermal management, drone hardware, rapid prototyping, and vendor coordination. This is a startup environment where you will be expected to move quickly from concept to CAD to prototype to manufacturing
WHAT YOU’LL DO
· Design mechanical parts and assemblies in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred), including prototype parts, fixtures, brackets, mounts, enclosures, heatsinks, cooling plates, and mechanical structures.
· Design for 3D printing, CNC machining, sheet metal, laser cutting, and other practical fabrication methods.
· DFM analysis on existing prototype designs to ensure manufacturability and the transfer to production.
· Prepare CAD models, drawings, STEP/STL files, BOMs, maintain version control and build documentation.
· Support rapid prototyping using in-house 3D printers and external fabrication resources.
· Design compact assemblies integrating PCBs, connectors, wiring, heatsinks, fans, pumps, tubing, thermal pads, fasteners, and enclosures.
· Design thermal solutions including heatsinks, airflow paths, cold plates, water cooling loops, and thermal interfaces, including performing basic mechanical and thermal calculations to guide design decisions.
· Evaluate mechanical strength, stiffness, vibration, weight, manufacturability, and thermal performance.
· Work with electronics and power hardware, including safe mechanical integration of batteries, power electronics, mains wiring, cable routing, strain relief, and connectors.
· Support drone-related mechanical design, including frames, motor mounts, payload mounts, vibration isolation, battery mounting, and lightweight structures.
· Coordinate with technicians on prototype assembly, test setup, and hands-on build activities.
· Work with vendors, machine shops, 3D printing services, and suppliers to source and fabricate parts and perform incoming inspection.
· Troubleshoot mechanical, thermal, electrical integration, and assembly issues in hardware prototypes.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Must be a US Person (US Citizen or Permanent Resident).
· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
· Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar tools (Fusion, Onshape, FreeCAD, ...) and strong 3D CAD skills; ability to design practical parts and assemblies that have actually been built, printed, machined, or assembled.
· Good understanding of mechanical design fundamentals: tolerances, fits, fasteners, materials, stiffness, strength, and manufacturability.
· Comfortable with rapid prototyping, 3D printing, and hands-on iteration.
· Basic thermal design understanding: heat transfer, heatsinks, airflow, thermal interface materials, and temperature rise.
· Comfortable working around electronics and integrating designs with PCBs, wiring, connectors, batteries, and power electronics.
· Ability to work from incomplete requirements and iterate quickly in a fast-paced startup environment.
· Strong attention to detail and practical problem-solving ability.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Experience designing heatsinks, cold plates, liquid cooling loops, fan-cooled assemblies, or other thermal management systems.
· Experience with drones, UAVs, multicopters, motor mounts, payload systems, vibration isolation, or flight hardware.
· Experience with carbon fiber, composite structures, 3D scanning and printed structural parts, or lightweight frame design.
· Experience with power electronics packaging, high-current wiring, batteries, motors, or thermal design for electronics.
· Experience with CNC machining, sheet metal, injection molding, or production DFM.
· FEA/simulation experience (Solidworks, CalculiX or similar).
· Experience with test equipment such as thermal cameras, thermocouples, anemometers, load cells, vibration sensors, or data acquisition systems.
· Experience in a startup, R&D lab, robotics company, drone company, or hardware prototyping environment.
· Experience designing/building high-reliability products for Aerospace, Automotive or similar industries.
· Comfortable using open-source and AI tools to optimize designs.
