Controls Engineer
About Rhino Pumps
Rhino Pumps is a full-service industrial pump company headquartered in Pleasant
Grove, Utah. We repair, service, and install pumping systems across the Mountain West,
serving municipalities, agriculture, mining, and industrial customers. Our in-house
capabilities include pump repair and overhaul, custom skid packages under the
RhinoSTAK brand, blasting and coatings, UL 508A certified panel builds, and full field
installation and commissioning. We are a team of around 50 people who take the work
seriously.
The Role
Our Controls and Electrical shop has been running for about a year. The panel build side
is solid — good people, good process, and a foundation that works. The engineering and
programming depth is where we are building next, and this role leads that effort.
The Controls Engineer owns everything from the design package forward: functional
descriptions, BOMs, panel layout drawings, I/O lists, PLC programming, and customer-
facing technical scope. You will be the senior controls voice at Rhino Pumps, working
alongside project managers, the panel build team, and customers from estimate
through commissioning.
What You'll Own
- The design package for every controls job: functional description, BOM, panel layout drawing, and I/O list — completed and reviewed before any build begins
- PLC and HMI programming — platform experience varies by project; ability to work across manufacturers is expected
- VFD application and configuration — selection, sizing, and setup per application requirements
- Panel build review and sign-off — checking builds against drawing, resolving discrepancies, and confirming readiness for FAT
- Factory acceptance testing: developing FAT procedures, running or overseeing the test, and documenting results
- Standard controls scope definition: surge protection, line reactors, control power transformer, pressure transducers, HOA on HMI, lead/lag sequencing, runtime meters, fault history, and Modbus RTU with register map for customer integration
- Customer-facing technical conversations on controls scope during pre-sale and project execution
- Controls estimates: scoping labor and material accurately, building BOMs from standard configurations, and supporting the estimating process
- Documentation package delivery: drawings, wiring schematics, register maps, O&M materials, and startup records
- Department standards: drawing templates, programming conventions, documentation practices, and review processes
- Supervision and development of controls department personnel
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of hands-on controls engineering in industrial, municipal, or process pump applications
- PLC programming experience on at least one major platform (Allen-Bradley, Schneider, Automation Direct, or equivalent); able to adapt across manufacturers
- VFD application experience across common industrial platforms; able to select, configure, and troubleshoot
- Working knowledge of UL 508A panel standards and NEC requirements
- Ability to produce and read electrical drawings: panel layouts, single-lines, wiring schematics, I/O lists
- Experience scoping controls work, building BOMs, and supporting project estimates
- Comfortable running customer conversations on controls scope and technical
Requirements
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent field experience
Nice to Have
- Background with pump systems, skid packages, or water/wastewater applications
- Experience with Modbus RTU mapping for third-party integration into customer BAS or SCADA systems
