Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and four years of progressively responsible clerical accounting experience; OR a bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and three years of progressively responsible clerical accounting experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
Related experience in an academic setting is highly preferred. Experience with Banner and Microsoft Office is preferred.
Job Description Summary
The University of South Alabama’s Mitchell College of Business is seeking to hire a Financial Operations Specialist II. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.
Essential Functions
- Manages fiscal planning and operation across all funding categories including state appropriations, federal funding, grants, development accounts, self-supporting funds and any other redeemable assets associated with the academic unit.
- Performs a high level of analysis to include preparing complex financial reports.
- Communicates with Academic Affairs and Executive Vice President’s Office as well as Vice President for Research regarding the unit’s fiscal activities.
- Conducts data collection, analysis and fiscal analytics.
- Serves as an essential contributor to the College’s strategic planning process.
- Formulates operational recommendations to the Dean based on fiscal analytics and that leverage changes in the fiscal ecosystem.
- Prepares monthly and quarterly financial reports including those that detail strategic and tactical expenditures by category and that estimate future fiscal health based on known commitments, known sources, and historical information.
- Utilizes Banner Finance to access College and departmental information.
- Maintains accurate files.
- Leads and supervises the unit’s financial management operations.
- Evaluates fiscal management workload and recommends staffing to meet the unit’s needs.
- Ensures investigators have effective assistance in the development, completion and review of the financial aspects of grant proposals including: reviewing contracts for compliance with applicable regulations prior to submission to administrators and the University Attorney’s office.
- Assists PI in developing budgets and supporting documentation.
- Reviews terms of awards and evaluates budget management.
- Monitors award burn rates.
- Takes action to correct identified burn rate deficiencies.
- Assists in the preparation of grant progress reports.
- Ensures compliance with applicable federal, state and university regulations.
- Oversees the financial operations and accounting for pre-award and post-award fiscal activities of all grants and contracts.
- Represents the College at various meetings.
- Regular and prompt attendance.
- Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required.
- Related duties as required.
