Company Description
Tecture is a creative design and fabrication studio where imagination meets precision. We tackle a wide range of projects, from custom architectural elements to unique experiential builds. We are looking for a Technical Designer who loves figuring out how things go together and isn’t afraid to push the limits of standard software to make extraordinary things happen.
Role Description
We are seeking an experienced Technical Designer to bridge the gap between our creative concepts and the fabrication floor. As a key member of the technical team, you will be a driving force behind our technical drafting, engineering and production processes.
A major focus of this position will be leveraging Microvellum to develop and streamline our shop drawing to production workflow. We need a Micovellum expert who can think outside the box, using the software creatively to engineer complex assemblies in a variety of materials. You will also be comfortable with casework and custom millwork, building out our component library and developing Tecture standards.
If you are a creative problem-solver who understands how to turn a 3D model into a buildable reality, we want you on our team.
Key Responsibilities
- Microvellum Mastery: Build, manage and optimize our Microvellum component library and develop solutions to streamline our production workflow.
- Creative Engineering: Push the boundaries of Microvellum to engineer and detail highly custom projects.
- Shop Drawings: Produce highly accurate, comprehensive shop drawings for our fabrication team in Rhino 3D and Microvellum.
- Design Translation: Work with Rhino 3D (or adapt from AutoCAD) to translate design intent into precise, manufacturable parts.
- Site Verification: Visit job sites to take precise field measurements and ensure our technical drawings align perfectly with real-world conditions.
- Document Review: Read, interpret, and cross-reference architectural construction documents (CDs) to ensure full project alignment.
- Constructability and Basic Engineering: Apply basic engineering principles to ensure structural integrity, specify appropriate hardware, and determine the most efficient ways to physically build the items we design.
Qualifications
- Microvellum Expertise: Proven experience using Microvellum, specifically with the ability to create and manage custom component and product libraries.
- Software Proficiency: Strong 3D modeling experience in Rhino 3D, our primary modeling environment. High proficiency in AutoCAD is acceptable provided you are willing to learn and adapt to our Rhino workflows.
- Drafting Experience: A strong portfolio of professional shop drawings and digital fabrication files.
- Fabrication Knowledge: A deep, practical understanding of how things are built. You should know materials, joinery, hardware, and assembly methods.
- Technical Literacy: Ability to confidently read and interpret complex construction documents and architectural plans.
- Field Experience: Comfortable traveling to job sites and taking accurate field measurements.
- Problem-Solving Mindset: You possess basic engineering intuition and love figuring out the mechanics of how custom objects support themselves, move, and function.
Compensation & Benefits
- Target Salary Range: $75,000 - $85,000 per year (DOE). Pay is based on several factors including experience, specific software expertise (Microvellum/Rhino), and portfolio.
- Benefits: Paid Time Off, paid company holidays, 401(k) plan with company match, company sponsored health insurance plan
