This is who we are and what we do:
Since 1974, Capital Valuation Group has specialized in helping owners of privately held companies in Wisconsin and across the United States resolve business valuation, ownership and transition issues.
Our business ownership solutions provide business owners with independent experts who help navigate through uncharted territory with thorough analysis, clear communication of results and problem solving. Our services help business owners understand and drive value in their business and move forward towards their goals which is why we get out of bed in the morning; helping business owners create the life they want through their business.
This is how we do it:
Capital Valuation Group has a multi-disciplinary team with backgrounds in accounting, finance, education and business ownership which allows us to provide a truly holistic approach to our work with business owners.
We are 100% focused on valuation, ownership solutions, and solving messy transition and succession issues. We thoroughly and objectively analyze and transform complex issues and information into simple conclusions that can be understood and used by our clients to make better-informed decisions without the overwhelm.
Our company core values:
- Integrity
- Accountability
- Transparency
- Family first
- Problem solvers
- Educators
- Lifelong learners
And when we say Family First, we mean it. We believe you can have an intellectually challenging career, do work you’re proud of, and still be present for the people and things that matter outside of work. We work hard and expect a lot from each other, but this isn’t a culture where being committed to your career means sacrificing the rest of your life. We want CapVal to be a place where great professionals can do meaningful work, keep learning, and build a long-term career while still having room for life.
We are a company that cares about relationships and results. The clock isn’t the great determinant of value. Your results and relationships are. If you are looking for “just another job” this is not the role for you.
Details about the position:
Who you are:
You see the story behind the numbers. Financial statements and tax returns read almost intuitively to you at this point, and when something looks off, your first instinct isn't to accept it, it's to ask why it happened. You understand how revenue, margin, people, working capital and risk all pull on each other inside a real business.
You come to the table with a point of view. You get the necessary information, you think it through, and you show up saying "here's what I think and why" rather than "what do you want me to do?" When you do need to escalate, you escalate thoughtfully instead of handing the problem upward and walking away.
You like the engagements where there isn't an obvious textbook answer; incomplete information, conflicting facts, a business that doesn't fit the model. You figure out what actually matters and you keep moving, and you're willing to change your conclusion when the facts change.
You have real technical credibility and you pair it with EQ. You read the room. You can take something genuinely complicated and explain it at the level the person in front of you can actually absorb, whether that's a CFO who wants the short version or an owner who has never heard the term before.
And you're comfortable asking an owner the uncomfortable questions about performance, forecasts, compensation, and customer concentration, and saying the thing they might not want to hear but need to hear.
You are organized, detail-oriented, and self-directed, maybe a recovering perfectionist.
You manage competing priorities, keep commitments, close loops, and get things across the finish line. You don’t need perfect conditions or repeated follow-up to make progress - you figure out what needs to happen next and keep things moving. You can see both the details and the bigger business picture, and you communicate early when something is at risk.
You pursue excellence without getting trapped by perfection. You care deeply about accuracy, clarity, and defensibility, but you also know when the analysis is sufficient to move forward.
You are comfortable on a small team, navigating different personalities, pitching in where needed, and building something over time.
You also thrive on critical thinking, solving problems and finding unique and efficient solutions that have positive ripple effects for our clients and business.
When you look at your day, you run it efficiently, own your tasks through to completion, and stay alert to where you can proactively add value or take something off the partners’ plates.
We want you to be able to make a plan and follow it through to the end.
You know how to get things done well. You take pride in the quality of your work, rise to the occasion when something matters, and bring a high level of care and professionalism to every interaction with clients and teammates.
You are looking for a place to call home, not just your next paycheck.
What we're looking for on paper:
- Credentials: CPA required. ASA, ABV, or CVA is a bonus.
- Experience: Roughly 6 to 10 years, already operating at the manager level. You've reviewed other people's work and carried responsibility for client deliverables.
- Background: Business valuation, transaction advisory or quality of earnings, public accounting audit, outsourced or fractional CFO advisory, or tax with unusually strong financial and business acumen.
- Client exposure: Meaningful experience with privately held businesses and their owners. Comfortable asking an owner difficult questions about performance, forecasts, compensation, customer concentration and management.
- Technical foundation: You read financial statements and tax returns almost intuitively. You understand cash flow, working capital, forecasting, normalization adjustments, debt, capital structure and business economics.
- Tax: Working knowledge of business and individual tax law is strongly preferred, including an understanding of C-corps and flow-through entities and confidence in reading and interpreting tax returns.
- Leadership: You've managed or reviewed junior staff and you like helping other people get better.
- Communication: You can explain something technically complicated without sounding technical. You are not someone we want hidden behind Excel.
- Career motivation: You want a smaller-firm environment with meaningful responsibility, variety, and real client interaction.
What you'll be doing:
Lead and independently manage client engagements
- Own valuation engagements start to finish, from handoff after intake through final delivery
- Run client meetings and drive the process without leadership needing to step in
- Chase down missing information and keep engagements moving
- Deliver within the timelines promised to clients
Produce high-quality valuation analysis
- Build projections and analysis you understand, agree with, and can defend
- Present engagements at internal team reviews as if presenting to the business owner
- Answer questions on growth assumptions, risk factors, and methodology with a point of view
Manage client relationships
- Own client communication, timelines, and expectations
- Translate complex financial concepts into language the person in the room actually understands, adjusting the level depending on who's across the table
- Ask owners the uncomfortable questions about performance, forecasts, compensation, and customer concentration
Hit production targets
- Meet weekly and annual billable hour goals. Goals are managed across the year, with responsibility for managing your pace to achieve the annual target.
- Support the firm's budget and capacity plan
Build team capacity
- Review and coach junior team members as the team grows
- Help improve templates, tools, processes, and the consistency of our work
Grow into expanded service lines
- Valuation is the core, and over time the work could extend into ESOP advisory, fractional CFO work including projection and cash flow modeling, and quality of earnings studies
Why you should be interested in this role:
This is a pivotal hire for CapVal. You will lead client engagements end to end and directly expand our ability to serve clients and grow without sacrificing the quality of our work or client experience.
You will take ownership of substantial pieces of the client relationship and technical work, giving senior leadership more capacity to focus on the highest-level judgment, strategic advisory, client relationships, business development, and firm leadership.
Because we are a small firm, your impact will be visible. Over time, we expect you to become a key technical and client leader at CapVal.
We will provide the training and context you need to be successful, but once you are up and running, we expect you to do your own work, make a plan, and follow it through without needing close supervision. This is not a sales role - you will not be responsible for sourcing new business, although you will be expected to build strong relationships with the clients you serve.
Why this job is important:
This is a cross-functional role and you’ll be an integral part of client delivery and project management.
Our ability to grow depends on adding another experienced professional who can independently own client work at the level our clients expect. This role expands our capacity without compromising the quality, thoughtfulness, and personal service that differentiate CapVal.
You will be an important link between our clients and the broader CapVal team, using your technical judgment to move engagements forward, developing others as the team grows, and helping us continually improve how we deliver our work.
As you grow into the role, you will take on increasing responsibility for client relationships and technical decisions, allowing our senior leaders to spend more time on complex judgment, strategic advisory work, business development, and the continued growth of the firm.
Bottom Line:
You are looking for a place to invest, build your career, and have a meaningful impact – not simply your next stepping stone. If you are self-motivated, organized, intellectually curious, committed to quality work, and ready to take real ownership, you could be who we have been searching for.
Compensation:
This is a full-time salaried position starting at $105,000 per year, with final compensation based on experience. The role offers room for compensation growth as responsibilities expand and includes a profit-sharing bonus component.
