Cannabis Social Media & Content Specialist

Purple Star MD is seeking a creative, organized, and dependable Social Media & Content Specialist to support and grow our digital presence.
This role is ideal for someone who understands social media, digital content, cannabis products, and the unique challenges of marketing a licensed cannabis retailer. Cannabis accounts often face platform restrictions, limited advertising options, content removals, and changing policies, so good judgment and attention to detail are important.
We are looking for someone who can create strong content, maintain accurate customer-facing platforms, support promotions, and help strengthen the Purple Star MD brand across digital channels.
Responsibilities
- Create and publish content across social media platforms
- Develop posts, Stories, Reels, product highlights, promotions, and event content
- Photograph and film products, staff, displays, and store activity
- Edit short-form video and create graphics using Canva, CapCut, Adobe, or similar tools
- Maintain a consistent content calendar and brand voice
- Keep Weedmaps, Leafly, Instagram, Google, Yelp, Facebook, and other digital platforms accurate and up to date
- Monitor reviews, comments, and direct messages
- Support product launches, vendor promotions, daily deals, and brand partnerships
- Coordinate content with in-store promotions and current product offerings
- Track engagement, reach, views, profile activity, and other performance metrics
- Stay current on cannabis culture, social media trends, platform changes, and emerging brands
- Help protect the health of our social accounts while continuing to grow reach and engagement
- Assist with basic updates or administrative tasks within Meadow POS Admin as needed
Qualifications
- Must be 21 years of age or older
- Must be familiar with cannabis products, brands, categories, and terminology
- Must be familiar with Weedmaps, Leafly, Instagram, Google, Yelp, Facebook, and other social media platforms
- Experience creating social media content for a business, brand, or organization
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Basic photography and video-editing skills
- Experience with Canva, CapCut, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools
- Strong organization and attention to detail
- Understanding of social media analytics and organic engagement
- Ability to work independently and consistently meet deadlines
- Familiarity with Meadow POS Admin is a plus, but not required
Previous cannabis industry experience is preferred.
Cannabis Social Media Requires a Different Approach
Marketing a cannabis retailer across social media comes with restrictions that do not exist in many other industries.
Licensed cannabis businesses may experience:
- Content removals
- Reduced organic reach
- Account warnings
- Advertising restrictions
- Limited promotional options
- Restricted features
- Account suspension or loss
The person in this role should understand the importance of staying current on platform policies and using good judgment when creating cannabis-related content.
The goal is to build a strong, professional, and engaging digital presence while reducing unnecessary risk to the company's accounts.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who is creative, reliable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced retail environment.
The right candidate should be able to take a new product, promotion, vendor partnership, event, or store update and turn it into clear, engaging content.
You should also be comfortable maintaining multiple digital platforms, monitoring how the business appears online, and adjusting content based on performance and feedback.
Position Details
Location: San Francisco, CA
Schedule: 30–40 hours per week
Work Location: On-site
Compensation: Competitive and based on experience
This position will be performed on-site at Purple Star MD. Regular in-store presence is required to create original content, coordinate with staff, support promotions, and stay current on products and store activity.
Some evening, weekend, or event-related availability may occasionally be needed.

Purple Star MD is a high-volume San Francisco cannabis retailer looking for someone who can help strengthen our digital presence with creative, consistent, accurate, and professional content.
Pay: $19.61 - $25.00 per hour
Expected hours: 30.0 – 40.0 per week
