About the role
Champion Commercial Roofing is hiring a Controller to own accounting, job costing and financial reporting for a nationwide commercial roofing and storm-restoration business. You will run a clean, timely close in Intuit Enterprise Suite and give leadership the numbers it needs to price work, manage cash and evaluate growth opportunities, including acquisitions.
This is a hands-on role. You will do the work yourself while building the processes, controls and lead the team that will let the finance function scale.
Key responsibilities
Accounting and close
- Own the general ledger, chart of accounts and month-end close in Intuit Enterprise Suite, closing within 10 business days.
- Prepare monthly financial statements: P&L, balance sheet, cash flow and job-level profitability.
- Manage AP, AR, payroll accounting, bank and credit card reconciliations, and fixed assets (trucks, equipment).
Construction accounting and job costing
- Maintain accurate job costing by project, phase and cost code for labor, materials, subcontractors and equipment.
- Prepare the monthly WIP schedule and recognize revenue on a percentage-of-completion basis (ASC 606).
- Manage progress billing, pay applications, retainage, change orders and lien waivers.
- Track insurance-restoration receivables: carrier payments, supplements, depreciation holdback and deductibles.
- Reconcile job costs between IES and field or estimating systems.
Cash, reporting and planning
- Manage cash flow forecasting, collections and vendor payment timing across seasonal and storm-driven swings.
- Build the annual budget and monthly budget-to-actual reporting for the CEO and executive team.
- Produce KPI reporting: gross margin by job and crew, backlog, DSO, overhead rate and close rate.
- Support financial due diligence and post-close integration for potential acquisitions.
Compliance and controls
- Manage sales and use tax on a national basis, 1099s, insurance audits (general liability, workers' comp) and bonding reports.
- Coordinate with outside CPAs on year-end, tax returns and any reviewed or audited statements.
- Design and enforce internal controls: approvals, segregation of duties, purchasing and expense policies.
- Supervise and develop accounting staff (AP/AR, billing, payroll).
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
- 7+ years of accounting experience, including 3+ years as a Controller or Assistant Controller.
- 3+ years in construction, roofing or another project-based trade, with hands-on job costing and WIP experience.
- Advanced, hands-on proficiency in Intuit Enterprise Suite, including projects, classes or dimensions, and multi-entity reporting.
- Working knowledge of percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, retainage and AIA or similar construction related billing.
- Advanced Excel: lookups, pivot tables and building forecasts from scratch.
Preferred
- CPA license.
- Experience in Quickbooks Online or Intuit Enterprise Suite, and setting up a new entity in either.
- Insurance-restoration or storm-work accounting experience.
- Experience integrating QuickBooks with field and estimating tools (such as AccuLynx, JobNimbus, ServiceTitan or Procore) and payroll platforms.
- Experience supporting an acquisition, private-equity ownership or lender reporting.
- Experience with bonding, surety and contractor licensing requirements in Texas.
What success looks like in year one
- Monthly close delivered in 10 business days or fewer, with a WIP schedule the executive team trusts.
- Job-level margins visible within days of a project closing, not months.
- A rolling 13-week cash forecast in use for weekly decisions.
- Documented controls and a finance calendar that run without the Controller in every step.
Who thrives here
- You are comfortable in the details and in front of the executive team.
- You explain numbers plainly to people in sales and operations.
- You fix broken processes instead of working around them.
- You stay steady when storm season doubles the workload.
Compensation and benefits
- Base salary: $85,000-$120,000, based on experience, plus annual performance bonus.
- Health, dental and vision insurance; 401(k); paid time off.
