Job Overview
We are seeking a senior engineer to own the shore-side computer systems that operators use to command our unmanned surface vessels: rugged operator laptops, ground control stations, remote operations centers, and training simulators.
You will own these systems as delivered products — architecture, hardware selection, operating system and platform baseline, security hardening, imaging and recovery, documentation, and lifecycle. You will work closely with our software team to host, integrate, and troubleshoot the mission applications that run on these platforms. This is a hands-on lead role for someone with deep platform engineering experience and a real understanding of software.
What You'll Do
Product Ownership & Architecture
- Own the architecture, bill of materials, and roadmap for operator laptops, ground control stations, operations centers, and simulator systems
- Define and maintain the platform baseline — operating systems, drivers, firmware, virtualization or containers, and supporting tools
- Manage hardware selection, supplier qualification, obsolescence, and technology refresh, including TAA and NDAA §889 sourcing compliance
- Scale operations center designs from a single console to multi-operator, multi-vessel operations: display walls, KVM, video distribution and recording, and secure remote access
Software Integration
- Partner with the software team to define deployment, configuration, and resource requirements for mission applications
- Integrate and troubleshoot application behavior on delivered platforms — performance, networking, display, peripherals, and dependencies
- Develop platform test procedures that confirm applications run correctly on each baseline before delivery
Program Delivery
- Serve as the technical lead for shore compute scope on U.S. and allied international customer programs
- Translate customer requirements into designs, estimates, and schedules
- Author and maintain interface documents, interconnect diagrams, configuration baselines, drawing packages, and acceptance test content
- Support design reviews, factory and customer acceptance testing, and customer site activation
- Provide technical content for operator manuals and training material
Configuration, Security & Supportability
- Maintain golden images, build procedures, and version manifests using configuration-as-code
- Harden Windows and Linux systems to DISA STIGs; define patching strategy for fielded systems; support RMF/ATO and CMMC efforts
- Establish repeatable imaging, provisioning, and recovery so technicians and field engineers can build and restore systems to baseline
Leadership
- Set technical direction for shore compute work and mentor the engineers and technicians who support it
- Work closely with the network and vessel systems leads so shore systems, links, and vessels operate as one system
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
- 8+ years designing, integrating, or sustaining computer systems delivered as products — command and control stations, operations centers, or rugged/tactical compute
- 2+ years in a technical lead role
- Deep hands-on Windows and Linux platform engineering: virtualization, imaging and deployment, drivers, and hardware integration
- Strong software background: able to read code, understand application architecture and dependencies, and work alongside software engineers to diagnose faults
- Working knowledge of networking fundamentals
- Experience hardening systems to DISA STIGs and producing engineering documentation under configuration control
- U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD SECRET clearance (active clearance preferred)
Desired Skills
- Ground control for unmanned systems (air, surface, or undersea) or maritime command and control
- Operations center design: video walls, KVM, video distribution, multi-operator consoles
- Containers and orchestration (Docker, Podman, Kubernetes)
- Infrastructure-as-code and deployment tooling (Ansible, MDT/SCCM, PXE)
- Scripting in Python, PowerShell, or Bash
- Rugged hardware selection to MIL-STD-810 / MIL-STD-461
- International or Foreign Military Sales programs
- Security+ or platform certifications (Microsoft, Red Hat, VMware)
Work Environment
- Engineering laboratories and integration areas
- Production and manufacturing floors
- Pier-side and at-sea vessel operations
- Customer sites, domestic and international — up to 25% travel
Why This Role Matters
The operator console is where the customer experiences our system. This role makes sure every console, ground station, and operations center we deliver is reliable, secure, and supportable for years after it ships.
