We place a priority on promoting a supportive and collegial team environment and enhancing staff experience through career development and educational opportunities.
Position Overview
We are seeking a (Junior) Migration Specialist to help support our client’s transition from SAS to modern data platforms. This role will assist with migration readiness assessments, organizing users into cohorts, and providing basic coaching and coordination support. The junior specialist will not perform actual migration work but will assist in gathering information, tracking progress, and sharing updates. They will work closely with senior team members, starting with one user group and expanding as capacity allows, focusing first on high-priority teams and keeping the client informed throughout the process.
Responsibilities
- Support structured discovery and assessment sessions with assigned user cohorts.
- Assist with performing detailed workload assessments, including:
- Evaluating SAS usage across projects and roles.
- Classifying workloads by type (SQL, data step, macros, visualization, etc.).
- Understanding the purpose and operational context of each workload.
- Collaborate with team members to align each job with the most suitable approved platform, considering its functionality, target users, and operational requirements.
- Collaborate with POCs to define and document phased migration plans for each cohort.
- Provide junior-level coaching and coordination support on non-technical tasks, assisting the migration team without directly leading migration efforts.
- Provide orientation on platform interfaces (e.g., Snowflake UI), access procedures, and storage best practices.
- Distribute templated materials, starter code, and configuration examples to facilitate independent migration.
- Respond to common “how-to” questions about platform access, code storage, data locations, and documentation.
- Assist in developing and locating templates and known guidance for SAS-to-modern platform transitions.
- Escalate specialized technical issues to client’s platform teams, IT support, or third-party tool vendors.
- Deliver biweekly or monthly status updates to the lead, including progress tracking and readiness sign-off documentation.
Qualifications
- US citizen or Authorized to Work and lived in the US for 3 of the last 5 years. Must be able to obtain a U.S. Federal government client badge and pass a government Public Trust.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum 4 years of experience.
- Excellent coordination, communication, and documentation skills.
- Ability to guide users through platform adoption processes without direct execution of migration tasks.
- A minimum of 4 years of experience with at least 3 years of experience performing data engineering or SQL coding or ETL tasks.
- 2 years of open-source programming language (like Python) experience.
- Experience with SAS is strongly preferred.
- Experience with CMS AWS infrastructure and CMS data repositories such as IDR or CCW is preferred.
- Experience with CMS data domains such as Medicare claims or beneficiaries or providers is preferred.
- Experience with Snowflake native tools is preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
