Mission Overview & Responsibilities
The New York Times is looking for an Associate Product Designer to support projects focused on internal platforms and tooling, shaping the UX and workflows to scale our most essential business capabilities.
Our Platforms teams build the underlying technologies that power our products and business at scale. You'll support design work across our Platforms teams, including Messaging, which power the first experiences a user has with our products when they land. You'll use your interaction and service design skills to translate system concepts and manual workflows into intuitive internal tools that help internal users visualize complex logic.
At The Times, Associate Product Designers are focused on not only honing their design skills, but learning about our products and design methodologies from the more experienced designers on the team. They are designers gaining familiarity with the practice of product design. Our intention is to begin to develop your skills as an designer and provide you with mentorship to help grow you in your career.
This is a hybrid role based in our New York City office.
Responsibilities
- Collect and actively incorporate feedback from fellow team members.
- Become familiar with the current state of a system or user experience.
- Establish familiarity with product design and the release cycle by supporting work and contributing components that lead to hitting team or company goals.
- Work with engineers and product teams to ensure design quality and consistency of shipped flows and interactions.
- Contribute to team and product design rituals.
- Practice transparency around keeping your team and mentors updated on your status.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
- You will report to the Design Director in Platforms Product Design.
Basic Qualifications
- A portfolio of work that showcases your design process along with finished design work.
- 1+ years of experience designing digital web or app products, with recent experience designing interactive products or tools.
- Proficient in using digital design tools such as Figma.
- Experience adapting to changing priorities and incorporating feedback from colleagues to refine work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficient in prototyping tools like Figma.
- Experience with user research and synthesis.
- Demonstrated experience with visual design principles, type hierarchies and layout, and systems.
- Strong ability to show design decisions and impact.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$80,000 - $95,000 USD
