Hey, I'm Mark, the owner of Numbskull. We are a small outdoor sports apparel brand based out of Salt Lake City. Our current industries are Moto, MTB, and Ski/Board. Our business has been growing rapidly and its time to bring in a technical apparel designer to take us to the next level. I would like to start the position off as part-time, retainer work, but it will likely move into a full time position by next winter.
Job Summary
We are seeking a creative and detail-oriented Technical Apparel Designer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing athletic and performance wear, transforming concepts into functional and stylish designs. This role requires a strong understanding of fashion design, garment construction, and technical specifications, with the ability to collaborate with our manufacturer in Pakistan to bring designs from concept to production. The successful applicant will have a passion for fashion retail, graphic design, and apparel innovation, contributing to the development of high-quality technical apparel that meets market demands. The candidate must have at least 2 years real-world experience in this line of work and a supporting degree. The applicant must also be an active skier/boarder so they understand the needs of the customer.
Duties
- Develop original technical apparel designs using Adobe Creative Suite tools such as Photoshop and Illustrator.
- Create detailed CAD sketches and technical flats to communicate design intent clearly.
- Manage product lifecycle from initial concept through sample development, fitting, and final production.
- Collaborate with the team to ensure designs meet performance standards and manufacturing specifications.
- Conduct fabric and material research, incorporating color theory and textile knowledge into design concepts.
- Assist in garment construction processes, including pattern making, sewing, and fitting adjustments.
- Prepare technical packages that include specifications, construction details, and colorways for manufacturing.
- Stay informed on current fashion trends, retail market insights, and emerging technologies in athletic wear.
- Support merchandising efforts by creating visual presentations and styling concepts for marketing campaigns.
- Participate in team meetings to review prototypes, provide feedback, and refine designs accordingly.
- Product testing to verify apparel function.
Skills
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator) for digital design and presentation.
- Experience with CAD software for technical pattern drafting and flat sketching.
- Knowledge of product lifecycle management systems to track design progress.
- Strong foundation in fashion design principles, garment construction, and sewing techniques.
- Familiarity with fabric properties, textile sourcing, and color theory application.
- Ability to operate sewing machines and understand garment assembly processes.
- Experience in fashion retail environments or fashion styling is a plus.
- Excellent illustration skills with attention to detail in technical flats.
- Understanding of merchandising strategies for apparel collections.
