Description
Under the supervision of the Engineering Manager, the Electrical Design Engineer demonstrates creativity and ingenuity when applying engineering principals to design of custom machinery; works as a member of the department and/or cross functional project team while coordinating work with others, to achieve on-time completion of the project within budgetary constraints.
- Design electrical schematics and panel layouts using CAD software (e.g., Solidworks Electrical, AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent).
- Develop electrical BOMs (Bills of Materials) and specify components such as PLCs, safety devices, power distribution, motion controllers, and industrial networks.
- Perform electrical calculations including load analysis, wire sizing, and short-circuit/current ratings.
- Design controls systems that comply with company and industry acceptable standards and codes (i.e. NEC, NFPA, ANSI, RIA, UL, etc.).
- Collaborate with controls engineers to support PLC and HMI implementation.
- Work with internal assembly technicians and panel shop during build and wiring phases to ensure design accuracy and address issues.
- Support system commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting both in-house and at customer sites.
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain documentation and revision control throughout project lifecycle.
- Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation and make recommendations to manufacturing staff.
- Assist with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) compliance and project certification for submittal to UL
- Assist with and follow Hardware Design Standards including graphical (schematic and layout standards), Materials, Reports and Procedures.
- Provide Project Manager (PM) with timely status reports of assignments.
- Complete all necessary Project Development paperwork and produce meaningful project control documentation.
- Travels as required to complete project tasks.
- Work with team members to improve the efficiency of the department.
- Maintains a strong company presence and positive working relationship with customers, subcontractors, vendors and co-workers to accomplish smooth system start-ups.
- Comply with all quality and safety regulations.
- Carry out other tasks and assignments as requested by the Engineering Manager or Project Manager.
Requirements for Electrical Design Engineer
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 3+ years of experience in electrical design for automation systems, machinery, or control panels preferred.
- Proficiency in electrical CAD tools (AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, etc.).
- Working knowledge of PLCs, industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, etc.), and motion control components.
- Understanding of relevant codes and standards such as NEC, NFPA 70/79, UL508A, and OSHA machine safety requirements.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
