Position Summary
Under the direction & reporting to the Associate Director, Capital Projects, the Engineering & Facilities Intern will support capital projects involving development of project scope for facility, utilities, & site infrastructure improvement, upfit, upgrade, & build, develop user requirements specification, schedule, design, procurement, construction oversight, commissioning & start-up, & management of equipment & associated aspects related to site’s prioritized capital projects. The intern will work closely with Engineering Operational Excellence, Facilities, EHS, scientific departments and/or cross functional teams focused on delivering project goals. A successful candidate will have a keen interest in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry, project management, extensive attention to detail, strong work ethic, and ability to manage multiple workstreams in parallel.
This position is based in RTP, supporting AskBio’s Durham and Morrisville locations.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide project management support for GMP & non-GMP equipment procurement and /or upgrades from initial specification and selection through procurement and startup
- Develop engineering documentation (User Requirements, P&IDs, scope, schedule, budget) to support facility engineering & equipment design as well as performing engineering calculations (where required) to size equipment & instrumentation
- Support commissioning & validation of project related equipment, facility and/or utilities to ensure the system is installed as designed, operates within the design parameters, and can perform as designed
- Create cost estimates & maintain project budgets
- Assist in developing and maintaining the site’s capital plan
- Create & manage engineering documents, drawings, technical specifications, turn over packages, etc.
- Provide project updates with key stakeholders
- Add and/or field verify new assets, mechanical equipment, & utility infrastructure into the maintenance program
- Provide operational support to facilities and safety department with creating & retiring equipment assets, job safety work permit, maintenance service agreements, and other project life cycle documentation
- Participate in the creation of processes and infrastructure for the project lifecycle best practice toolkits, SOP’s, PPT presentations, Smartsheet templates/views, etc.
Minimum Requirements
- Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction, science, biotechnology, or related field
- Must be at least a Junior in university at the time of your application
- Strong sense of accountability and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Flexible and willing to support a variety of tasks for multiple departments & coordination with external vendors required
- Available to work full-time at the office (multiple sites) during the summer months (May-August)
Preferred Education, Experience And Skills
- Prior internship, work, or volunteer/extracurricular experience
- Project management & technical experience
- Project Management Software (Smartsheet, MS Project, Visio, etc.) and Data Analysis & Visualization Tools (Excel, Power BI, etc.) experience
- Proficient with MS Office Suite and ability to learn new technologies quickly
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience planning and scheduling interdependent activities
- Proactive and solution-driven mindset
- Flexible and willing to support a variety of tasks for the engineering & facilities team
