POSITION SUMMARY
The Head of Strategy will lead the development and execution of the company’s long-term growth strategy across distributed energy markets, including microgrids, distributed energy resources (DERs), and commercial & industrial (C&I) energy solutions. This role will identify and prioritize market opportunities, guide major strategic investments, and ensure alignment between market dynamics, regulatory frameworks, and the company’s commercial strategy. A critical component of the role is ownership of regulatory and market strategy, ensuring the company is positioned to succeed across evolving energy markets, policy structures, and utility frameworks.
The Head of Strategy will work closely with the CEO and executive leadership to shape the company’s strategic direction, evaluate new growth opportunities, and lead high-impact initiatives that drive long-term value.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Corporate & Growth Strategy
- Develop and continuously refine the company’s long-term strategic roadmap.
- Identify and evaluate new market opportunities including new products, services, customer segments, and geographic expansion.
- Provide strategic insights to executive leadership and the board on market trends, competitive positioning, and growth opportunities.
Regulatory & Market Strategy
- Own the company’s regulatory and market strategy across key jurisdictions and energy markets.
- Monitor and analyze regulatory developments affecting distributed energy, microgrids, and C&I electricity usage.
- Identify policy, tariff, and market design opportunities that enable new revenue streams and business models.
- Where applicable, partner with industry stakeholders to influence and navigate regulatory frameworks.
Market Intelligence & Competitive Strategy
- Lead market analysis and develop competitive intelligence and positioning strategies
- Evaluate emerging technologies, regulatory structures, and market incentives impacting Unison’s business.
Executive Decision Support
- Provide strategic analysis and recommendations for major commercial decisions, market entry strategies, and capital allocation.
- Prepare executive and board-level strategy materials and market insights.
Sales Guidance and Support
- Provide and maintain “Riverbanks” for standard sales deals
- Communicate market approaches and customer positioning (including relevant presentations) to sales
- Support sales in structuring non-standard deals, including RFPs
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in strategy, corporate development, energy markets, consulting, or distributed energy leadership roles.
- Deep understanding of distributed energy resources (DERs), microgrids, C&I energy markets, and energy market structures.
- Strong experience navigating regulatory frameworks, energy policy, and market design.
- Proven ability to evaluate complex strategic opportunities and lead cross-functional initiatives.
- Strong financial modeling, market analysis, and executive communication skills.
- Experience working with utilities, regulators, ISOs/RTOs, or energy developers is strongly preferred.
