THE OPPORTUNITY
The
Engineering Intern / Co-op role is a developmental position designed for students pursuing an engineering degree who are interested in utility focused engineering and design. This role focuses on hands-on learning of utility design tools, standards, and processes while supporting project teams with supervised technical and field-based tasks. Interns/co-ops gain exposure to real-world utility engineering work while building foundational technical and professional skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist engineering staff with substation or line design drawings, using design tools, engineering software, and utility standards.
- Help prepare construction drawings, bills of material, and project documentation.
- Coordinate with drafters to provide markups and updates to design packages.
- Participate in field visits for site assessment, measurements, and construction support.
- Perform basic engineering calculations and checks in accordance with NESC, RUS, and client-specific standards, with guidance from senior engineers.
- Support the project team in meeting schedule, quality and documentation requirements while developing professional engineering skills.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or related ABET-accredited Engineering discipline.
- Completed or working toward core engineering coursework.
- Available for an internship or co-op term (duration and schedule dependent on academic program).
Skills
- Fundamental understanding of engineering principles; exposure to utility or power systems coursework is a plus.
- Familiarity with MS Office; exposure to AutoCAD, GIS tools, Bluebeam, or analytical software is beneficial but not required.
- Ability to follow structured processes and apply guidance from engineers and designers.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and willingness to learn.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and incorporate feedback constructively.
- Interest in electric utility industry and design
- Collaborative, team-player with a positive attitude
