SUMMARY
The Metallurgical Engineer is responsible for all aspects of melting production and application. This position is a cross-functional position that involves interaction with quality, molding, melting and sales. The Metallurgical Engineer will interact with our customers to identify needs and will be responsible for metal integrity which may require failure analysis and reporting when appropriate.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide Metallurgical support to the melt functions
- Complete casting material certifications and send to customers when required
- Perform Metallurgical testing to support problem solving and product development
- Operate the spectrometer
- Identify cost improvement opportunities in the Melt area.
- Researching methods of alloy production and formulating cost effective and efficient methods
- Studying the properties of various materials and finding means of improving their characteristics
- Assist with product inspection, development of inspection criteria, and training employees on customer requirements for products
- Participate in problem solving and continuous improvement efforts related to casting quality
- Comply with policies, guidelines and regulatory requirements per the Quality System.
· Collaborating with technical staff who are responsible for the testing/reporting/support of production material and processes
· Ensuring appropriate preventative testing and plant analysis are completed to deliver the safe and controlled operations of equipment and processes
· Overseeing and implementing processes or product improvement projects
· Developing processes to maximize capacity utilization, minimize cost and provide quality products
· Working in cross functional teams to support plant business goals and objectives
· Developing and implementing foundry processes with molding, melting and casting capabilities
- Initiating corrective actions of problems and casting defects to ensure product quality
- Generating furnace charges from chemical analysis of raw material
- Supporting new foundry equipment installation and evaluation
· Responsible to act in accordance with all DFI policies and procedures.
· Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
· Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining networks and participating in professional organizations when applicable
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This job has supervisory responsibilities. Directly supervises their team. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training staff members, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining staff members; and addressing complaints and resolving issues.

a. Education and / or Experience
B.S. degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering; Experience in a metal working operation with a minimum of 3 years of experience preferred. Prior experience with solidification modeling preferred.
