SPACES by Hollie Velten is seeking a part-time Kitchen & Bath Designer to support residential renovation projects throughout Northern New Jersey.
This is a hands-on design and technical role for someone who is equally comfortable thinking through a space and documenting it. We are looking for someone who can evaluate existing conditions, develop thoughtful kitchen and bath layouts, and carry those ideas through accurate plans, elevations and detailed design documentation.
This is not primarily a drafting position. The right person should be comfortable actively developing space-planning and cabinetry solutions alongside our Creative Director—not simply drawing an established design.
What You’ll Do
- Conduct onsite field measurements and existing-condition surveys
- Translate field measurements into accurate existing-condition plans
- Develop and explore multiple kitchen and bath space-planning solutions
- Think critically about circulation, clearances, cabinetry, storage, appliances, plumbing and functionality
- Develop cabinetry and custom millwork layouts and elevations
- Produce dimensioned floor plans, elevations and detailed design documentation
- Coordinate appliance and plumbing specifications with proposed layouts
- Review existing architectural drawings and field conditions
- Incorporate design revisions, site conditions and trade feedback into drawing sets
- Participate in select site visits, project meetings and design milestones
- Coordinate with the SPACES team, architects, contractors, millworkers and other trades
What We’re Looking For
Professional experience with residential kitchens and bathrooms is important for this role. You should have a strong understanding of how these spaces are designed, documented and ultimately built.
Ideal experience includes:
- Kitchen and bath space planning
- Kitchen cabinetry and custom millwork design
- Residential construction and renovation
- Plumbing fixtures, appliances and their impact on layouts and rough-ins
- Accurate field measuring and existing-condition documentation
- Dimensioned plans and interior elevations
- AutoCAD and/or Revit proficiency
- Understanding of typical cabinetry dimensions, clearances and construction
- Experience communicating design intent to contractors, fabricators and trades
- Strong attention to dimensions, details and drawing accuracy
Experience working in older residential homes and navigating imperfect or unusual existing conditions is especially valuable.
We’re looking for someone who can bring ideas to the table, identify potential issues and help solve them—not someone who needs every layout and detail predetermined before beginning the drawings.
Schedule + Location
This is a part-time contract position averaging approximately 2 days per week, with some flexibility around site visits and project milestones. Hours may increase as our renovation project schedule grows.
This position requires regular in-person work at our Maplewood, NJ studio and onsite at residential projects throughout Northern New Jersey.

About SPACES
SPACES by Hollie Velten is a Maplewood, New Jersey-based interior design studio specializing in expressive, highly considered residential interiors and renovations. Our work combines creative interior design with detailed architectural planning, custom millwork and close collaboration with architects, builders and craftspeople.
Our studio is small and collaborative, and this role will work directly with the Founder/Creative Director as an important technical and design partner on kitchen, bath and renovation projects.
