Position Summary
- The position encompasses the technical detail of steel and steel making, as well as the communication and use of knowledge to drive the Eaton Steel businesses in a strategic and ethical direction.
- The position includes laboratory involvement including metallurgical testing, failure analysis and guidance.
- The position includes involvement in each department as it relates to specifications, metallurgical detail, and steel making expertise.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs metallurgical testing including but not limited to grain size, microstructure, macro-etching, inclusion rating, decarburization, graphite rating, and failure analysis/investigation.
- Uses and maintains the optical microscopes, scanning electron microscope, microhardness tester, mounting and polishing equipment,
- hardness testers, tensile testers, Charpy impact tester, and acid etchants.
- Writes laboratory reports with technical opinions on metallurgical testing.
- Reads and interprets tensile, hardness, and chemistry data (including raw graphical data) to validate material properties and characteristics as well as the testing used to gather data.
- Develops metallurgical testing to common industry standards to generate business cases and lab expansion.
- Reviews and determines conformance to ASTM, SAE, and ISO standards for laboratory testing.
- Provides guidance for laboratory technicians as it relates to the technical aspect of material testing.
- Provides technical guidance and support to customers as it relates to product, process, and specifications for steel bar.
- Gives disposition of material for metallurgical based non-conformance and provides possible alternative resolution to salvage/use material.
Maintains and actively seeks industry knowledge of metallurgical processes including steel making, heat treating, cold finishing, surface treating, and non-destructive testing.
Reviews and determines product/process conformance to customer specifications, as well as ASTM, SAE, MIL, AMS, API, and ISO/DIN standards.
Develops grade standards and heat treat standards, as well as process routings and communicates them to the correct department for proper use.
Reviews and approves part specifications and certification changes based on specification knowledge.
Maintain vendor and customer relationships with technical departments.
Aids with quality claim resolution when technical detail is required to make a judgment.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering or Metallurgical Engineering from an ABET accredited university
