Position Overview
The Machine Learning Engineer II at Restoration of America is responsible for architecting, developing, and operationalizing advanced machine learning systems that power ROA DTS’s political data initiatives. This role requires reliable execution across the full ML lifecycle—data exploration, feature engineering, model development, validation, deployment, and monitoring—to support high-stakes electoral decision-making. Working closely with the Executive Director of DTS, Director of Political Data Strategy, CIO, and other senior stakeholders, the Senior Machine Learning Engineer translates complex political and analytical challenges into scalable, production-grade ML solutions. This position drives innovation within the political data operation, ensuring models, pipelines, and systems are accurate, reliable, and strategically aligned with organizational goals. The role requires a high degree of autonomy, technical rigor, and the ability to execute end-to-end without hand-holding in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and deploy machine learning models and end-to-end data pipelines that directly inform voter targeting, persuasion, allocation strategies, and decision-making within political campaigns.
- Use the full ML lifecycle, including dataset exploration, feature generation, experiment design, model training, validation, scaling, production deployment, and performance monitoring.
- Translate ambiguous political and strategic needs into well-scoped, tractable machine learning and analytical projects.
- Collaborate with analysts, strategists, and organizational leadership to prioritize high-value ML initiatives and integrate model outputs into operational workflows.
- Establish standards for MLOps, including monitoring, drift detection, retraining processes, and automated CI/CD workflows for ML artifacts.
- Work with large, messy, multi-source datasets—including voter files, digital engagement data, polling, advertising, and demographic datasets—to create engineered features for high-performance modeling.
- Partner with cloud engineering and data engineering teams to ensure reliable infrastructure, cost-aware compute environments, and scalable deployment patterns.
- Mentor junior team members and contribute to a culture of technical excellence, ownership, and rapid execution.
- Support in-campaign data operations with model-driven insights, rapid-turnaround analyses, and recommended actions during critical windows.
- Architect clean, maintainable, production-grade Python code and enforce best practices for modeling, testing, reproducibility, and deployment.
- Other duties and responsibilities as determined by the Company.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in machine learning, data science, quantitative modeling, or related engineering disciplines.
- Proven success building production ML systems in high-velocity environments such as marketing analytics, startup environments, or quantitative finance.
- Expert-level proficiency in Python, including experience designing maintainable, scalable, production-ready ML codebases.
- Deep experience with ML frameworks such as scikit-learn, XGBoost, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.
- High proficiency in SQL and working with large, complex, and unstructured datasets.
- Experience building, deploying, and monitoring ML models in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and familiarity with modern MLOps tooling.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders and translate business questions into analytical frameworks.
- Self-directed, able to independently identify high-leverage opportunities and execute with minimal oversight.
- Comfortable operating in ambiguous, rapidly evolving contexts with incomplete information.
- Enthusiastic about supporting conservative policy goals and candidates.
