Marblehead Little Theatre is seeking a collaborative, detail-oriented Sound Designer to oversee all aspects of sound design and reinforcement for our production ofJagged Little Pill. This contemporary rock musical requires dynamic sound mixing, strong vocal clarity, and seamless integration of a live band with a full cast of performers in a black box space.
The Sound Designer will design and implement the overall sound concept, create and manage any QLab file for sound effects, and work closely with the Music Director to ensure musical balance and vocal intelligibility throughout the run. They will attend key rehearsals, tech, and performances to program, refine, and maintain the sound design.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute the overall sound design forJagged Little Pill, including reinforcement, effects, and snybotger sound needs.
- Create, build, and manage the QLab file for all sound effects.
- Collaborate with the Director and Music Director to support the storytelling and musical vision of the production.
- Coordinate microphone plots, body mic distribution, and sound system setup appropriate for a contemporary rock score.
- Attend a designer run to assess vocal balance and adjust mixing strategies as needed.
- Lead sound load-in and system setup in coordination with the technical director/facilities manager.
- Program and run sound during tech rehearsals and performances
- Troubleshoot and resolve sound-related issues during tech week and the performance run.
- Participate in strike following the final performance.

- June 14 (Tech Sunday): 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM
- Tech Week Evenings: 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Performances (10 total):
- June 19: 7:30 PM
- June 20: 2:00 PM & 7:30 PM
- June 21: 2:00 PM
- June 24: 7:30 PM
- June 25: 7:30 PM
- June 26: 7:30 PM
- June 27: 2:00 PM & 7:30 PM
- June 28: 2:00 PM
Strike: Immediately following the final performance on June 28.
- Experience designing and mixing sound for live musical theatre, particularly contemporary or rock-driven scores.
- Proficiency in QLab programming and digital sound board operation.
- Strong understanding of vocal reinforcement, live band mixing, and feedback management.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with directors, musicians, performers, and production staff.
- Availability for key rehearsals, tech week, and performances.
- Comfort working in a community theatre environment with volunteer artists.
- Enthusiasm for supporting bold, contemporary musical storytelling.
