How You Will Make An Impact
Halozyme Hypercon is seeking an curious and enthusiastic Engineer I who will be responsible for operating lab and pilot plant scale unit operations at Halozyme Hypercon. This role reports to a Process Development Supervisor and will support the development of biologically active microparticle suspensions. This individual will join a growing multidisciplinary team of scientists/engineers to contribute to a variety of development activities in a highly collaborative environment.
The Engineer I role enables our development of robust scalable manufacturing processes for the Hypercon drug product formulation platform by supporting bench-scale and pilot scale experiments. The Engineer I will set up, tear down and maintain equipment, including the generation or improvement of operating instructions, logs and related batch protocols. They will also be asked to execute experiments under the supervision of a development study leader, including data collection, sampling, and in-process testing.
The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record of attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols in an operational environment and they will identify opportunities to enhance our operational excellence. Success in this role requires adaptability and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
In This Role, You’ll Have The Opportunity To
- Execute and document process development experiments. Collaborate with development study leader to form experiment plans.
- Conduct in process testing to characterize microparticle intermediates and bulk drug product materials such as pH, concentration, density, particle size distribution or other at-line or off-line measurements.
- Perform daily lab experiments such as blending, filtration, concentration, etc. for microparticle suspensions
- Document and present experiment results within PD and cross-functionally
- Install, test, qualify, and troubleshoot process equipment. Maintain equipment use and maintenance records. Perform routine preventative maintenance and identify the root cause of equipment malfunctions to minimize downtime
- Collaborate with other Process Development (PD) engineers to optimize manufacturing workflows
- Identify opportunities to improve procedures and make revisions to associated SOPs or development batch records as needed
- Work closely with internal functional groups (analytical, formulation, internal manufacturing) to generate meaningful development data
- Adhere to Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) guidelines and apply them to daily lab work
Requirements
To succeed in this role, you’ll need:
- B.S. in Chemical, Biomedical, Materials, or Pharmaceutical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
- A detail-oriented approach to experimentation. Attention to detail and the ability to thoroughly document experimental work
- Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities to enable rapid troubleshooting
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- The ability to work independently and efficiently in a fast-paced R&D environment
- Familiarity with standard office software (MS Office). Familiarity with computer programming languages or programable logic controllers (PLCs) is a plus.
- Ability to transport large volume containers and move large process equipment, with assistance from others and following applicable EHS guidelines
- Some experience with GMP manufacturing sites preferred
- Proficiency in reading technical manuals, schematics, P&IDs, SOPs, etc. preferred

The most likely base pay range for this position is $68,000-$90,000 per year. Several factors, such as experience, tenure, skills, and particular business needs, will determine an individual’s exact level of compensation. Base salary is only one element of employee compensation at Halozyme. Total compensation could include bonuses, sales incentives, and equity awards.
