Position Description
The Design Engineer I plays a key role in developing innovative medical devices and technologies that advance healthcare worldwide. As part of Applied Medical’s Technology and Development Mechanical team, the Design Engineer I is responsible for designing and developing components, assemblies, and fixtures that support product performance, manufacturability, and safety. This position is based onsite at Applied Medical’s global headquarters and offers the opportunity to collaborate with cross-functional teams across engineering, manufacturing, and quality to bring cutting-edge medical products to market.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop medical device components, assemblies, and fixtures using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software such as SolidWorks.
- Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to ensure design accuracy and manufacturability.
- Create and test prototypes to validate design intent, functionality, and performance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to support product development and design transfer.
- Conduct design analysis, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and tolerance stack-up evaluations, to optimize component strength and reliability.
- Prepare and maintain comprehensive design documentation, including drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
- Participate in design reviews and contribute to the continuous improvement of Applied Medical’s product development process.
- Ensure all design activities align with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations and ISO quality system standards for medical device development.

Position Requirements
This position requires the following skills and attributes:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a related field (BS in mechanical engineering or equivalent accepted).
- Up to one year of relevant engineering work experience, including internships or academic projects.
- Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) modeling and drafting, preferably using SolidWorks.
- Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Hands-on experience creating and testing prototypes.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, including technical writing.
- Ability to understand, analyze, and troubleshoot complex mechanical systems.
- Capability to work effectively both independently and in cross-functional team environments.
- Ability to develop creative, data-driven solutions to engineering challenges.
Preferred
The following skills and attributes are preferred:
- Experience in the medical device industry or familiarity with medical device product development.
- Knowledge of surgical procedures, clinical applications, and regulatory requirements.
- Understanding of manufacturing and quality standards, including FDA regulations and ISO 13485 quality systems.
- Exposure to Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Test Method Validation.
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Minitab, or other statistical analysis software.
- Familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools such as SAP NetWeaver.
- Demonstrated creativity and problem-solving skills in developing innovative product designs.
