Company Overview:
High-Hand is a well-known local business focused on delivering fresh, local food to our restaurants and brewery. Our 32-acre Maple Rock Farm is an integral part of that vision, producing high-quality, seasonal crops and fresh eggs for our cafe and brewery. In addition to farming operations, we host seasonal events at Maple Rock and are looking for a farmer who can contribute to these efforts by preparing the farm and coordinating with our events team.
Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced farmer to take full responsibility for the planning, planting, growing, harvesting, and maintenance of crops at Maple Rock Farm, as well as care for the farm’s chickens. In addition, the farmer will play a key role in helping to prepare the farm for seasonal events by coordinating with the website designer and hospitality management. The ideal candidate will be able to manage both the farming operations and event preparations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Crop Management:
- Plan, plant, and cultivate seasonal crops to meet the needs of High-Hand’s restaurants and brewery.
- Develop and maintain a planting schedule, ensuring continuous availability of fresh produce throughout the year.
- Prepare soil, manage irrigation, control pests, and maintain overall farm health.
- Implement crop rotation and sustainable practices to maintain soil health and optimize yields.
- Harvest crops and coordinate the delivery of fresh produce to the restaurant and brewery.
- Farm Operations:
- Operate, maintain, and repair farm machinery and tools.
- Manage supplies such as seeds, fertilizers, and other necessary materials for crop production.
- Hire and oversee farm labor during peak seasons, as needed.
- Manage the farm’s budget and report on yields and operational performance.
- Livestock Care (Chickens):
- Tend to the care and welfare of chickens, including feeding, monitoring health, and maintaining clean and safe housing.
- Collect eggs daily and ensure proper storage and delivery for restaurant use.
- Manage chicken rotation and feed supplies.
- Event Preparation and Coordination:
- Assist in preparing Maple Rock Farm for seasonal events, including beautifying the grounds and ensuring the farm is presentable.
- Coordinate with High-Hand’s website designer to ensure farm events are properly promoted online.
- Work with the hospitality management team to ensure that farm operations are aligned with the needs of upcoming events, helping to create a memorable experience for visitors.
- Farm Maintenance:
- Maintain fences, buildings, and irrigation systems, ensuring all farm infrastructure is kept in good working condition.
- Keep accurate farm records, including planting schedules, harvest data, and livestock care logs.
- Adapt to changing weather conditions and implement best practices for crop health and yield.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience managing a farm or agricultural operation, ideally with a focus on food production for commercial use.
- Knowledge of organic and sustainable farming methods.
- Experience with livestock care, particularly chickens and egg production.
- Ability to operate and maintain farming equipment and tools.
- Strong organizational skills for managing diverse farm tasks and preparing for events.
- Excellent communication skills for working with teams in hospitality and web design.
- Physical stamina and resilience to handle the demands of farm work in various weather conditions.
