Position Overview
The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all accounting, financial reporting, and administrative functions of the company. This role is critical to ensuring accurate job costing, strong cash flow management, compliance, and operational efficiency across office and field operations.
The candidate will have at least 5 years of accounting experience within the commercial construction industry, is highly organized, and can act as a financial partner to ownership while managing day-to-day accounting and administrative staff.
Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Management & Accounting
- Oversee all accounting functions including AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, and month-end close
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Manage job costing, WIP schedules, cost-to-complete, and margin analysis for different divisions within the company
- Monitor cash flow, forecasting, and budgeting
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and loan statements
- Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with GAAP
Construction-Specific Responsibilities
- Ensure proper setup and tracking of jobs, phases, cost codes, and change orders
- Review project profitability and provide variance analysis
- Track retainage, lien releases, certified payroll (if applicable), and compliance requirements
- Work closely with project managers and estimators to ensure financial accuracy
- Support bid reviews with historical cost data and margin analysis
Accounts Payable & Receivable
- Oversee vendor payments, subcontractor pay apps, and lien waivers
- Manage customer invoicing, progress billings, and collections
- Monitor aging reports and actively manage receivables
Payroll & HR Administration
- Oversee payroll processing including prevailing wage / certified payroll if applicable
- Ensure compliance with labor laws, workers’ comp, and payroll tax filings
- Assist with HR administration including onboarding, benefits coordination, and employee records
Compliance, Controls & Reporting
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Coordinate with external CPA, auditors, and tax professionals
- Maintain internal controls and improve accounting processes
- Prepare documentation for bonding, insurance audits, and lender requests
Administrative & Office Oversight
- Supervise accounting and administrative staff
- Implement systems and procedures to improve efficiency
- Oversee office operations related to accounting and administration
- Serve as a key internal resource for ownership and leadership
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred but not required)
- 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in construction
- Strong knowledge of construction accounting and job costing
- Experience with construction accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, Viewpoint, Procore, or similar)
- Strong Excel and financial analysis skills
- Proven ability to manage deadlines and multiple priorities
- High level of integrity, attention to detail, and professionalism
Preferred Experience
- Concrete, framing, or subcontractor construction experience
- Experience supporting multi-entity or growing construction companies
- Experience working directly with owners and executive leadership
Pay: $85,000.00 - $105,000.00 per year
