Job Title: Materials Design Engineer

Employment Type: W2 Contract (6 months, with possible extensions)
Pay Rate: $46.00 - $51.40/hr
Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Materials Design Engineer with strong expertise in castings, forgings, and metallography to support aerospace propulsion and auxiliary power applications. This role provides technical leadership in materials and process engineering for new and existing cast and/or forged products. You will work as part of a highly collaborative Materials Engineering team and serve as a technical resource for less-experienced engineers.
This position is 100% on-site in Tempe, AZ and involves close collaboration with engineering, quality, supplier development, and supply chain teams to ensure high-performance, compliant aerospace components.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide materials and process engineering support for cast and/or forged aerospace components
- Support design and manufacturing activities for aluminum, steel, titanium, and nickel-based alloys
- Participate in all phases of product development, from concept through production support
- Serve as a technical point of contact and mentor for junior engineers
- Troubleshoot material and process-related issues and provide rapid technical solutions
- Collaborate with suppliers to resolve casting and forging issues and drive continuous improvement
- Assess new suppliers, evaluate capabilities, and support supplier development initiatives
- Conduct or support supplier audits (casting, forging, billet/ingot, powder processes)
- Act as a liaison between suppliers and internal engineering, quality, supplier development, and supply chain teams
- Review and interpret engineering drawings, material specifications, and processing requirements
- Support process improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, or related methodologies
- Travel up to 10% within the U.S. to supplier locations
- Occasionally lift up to 35 lbs (single lift) as required
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline
- 4+ years of experience in materials and/or process engineering within the casting and/or forging industry
- 4+ years of hands-on experience with aerospace aluminum, steel, titanium, and nickel alloys
- Strong background in castings, forgings, and/or metallography
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering
- Advanced engineering degree a plus
- Hands-on experience with casting and/or forging processes (investment casting, sand casting, billet/ingot, powder production)
- Familiarity with aerospace material and processing specifications
- Working knowledge of Nadcap and related aerospace industry standards
- Experience conducting supplier audits and supporting supplier qualification
- Experience working cross-functionally with design engineering teams
- Proficiency in troubleshooting complex material and process issues
- Experience with casting and/or forging simulation tools (e.g., DEFORM)
- Familiarity with Six Sigma, Lean, or other process improvement tools

Contract Details
- Duration: 6 months
- Extension: Possible based on performance and business needs
- Work Location: On-site in Tempe, AZ
- Travel: Approximately 10% (U.S.-based suppliers only)
Timekeeping & Onboarding
- Weekly time reporting via TWB
- Worker will be registered in Fieldglass by the supplier; no direct system access required
